Can get pretty hairy at times so depending on weather probably not a good idea for inexperienced skippers. once clear, drop in a couple of rapala's and troll north. likely to catch a few spanish/shark mackeral, yellow fin tuna, possibly wahoo, few bronze whalers etc etc etc. Then come back in the north passage, probably about 4 hours worth of trolling speed.

my best fish out the back was a 27.5kg spanish mackeral, have also caught a small sail fish

always advisable to check in to the local shop for advice and info on tides etc. And if its a big swell stay well away from the reef coz when your hooked on a fish and not paying attention to the water, they creep up on ya. nearly been caught a couple of times.
Thanks for the info.

My friend is a new skipper so we have been told to only go through the north passage.

We want to try and catch some snapper up there any suggestions?

Also I have 65 pound line - what should my strike drag be around?

Cheers

Chris

yeah north is much safer but take it easy getting there, some of the coral bombies are only marked with floats so it is possible to go the wrong side and get into strife. Should be right with 50lb line, just play the drag by feel coz it changes with fish.

Not sure on snapper spots, i've always trawled out the back never bottom fished there. did catch a NW snapper on a deep diving rapala once though personally i think trawlings the go.

The locals guard their good spots for red emperor/snapper pretty good. Try following a boat that looks like they know what they're dong and where they're going

I recommend that you stay away from BCF Balcatta as every time I go there I am not accountable for my purchases
