Brendon, Im doing something similar in my reno. Using the clipsal star serve throughout the house as well as running cat 5 and cat 6 cables. cctv plugs into the star serve module, as does my dvd player, ps3, foxtel, internet etc. Tv in every rooom of the house if required. simply flick a channel and the desired viewing is there. run the IR option to control from each viewing point.

theoretically anyway, i'll know once its finished and up and running.

edit: http://www.cleverhome.com.au/automat...Networking.pdf

check out the link for more info. It is a hardwired setup so you'd need to retrofit, but if you have decent access via the roof space, its not impossible to implement.

I have plenty of room in the roof and cavity walls.

Would be great if it could control the retic / ac etc.

Will keep you updated on this one. Any other ideas still greatly accepted.

2tb Hard drives are really cheap at the moment.. I reckon go to a computer store and get one built ground up with 2 x 2tb hard drives and a decent graphics card for the CCTV. I usually just go see Storm Computers in Cannington or Myaree depending on if I'm coming from home or work.. they are really helpful.

I have a nice quad core I built about 3 years ago and its awesome.. have done stuff all to it and it still works perfectly.. I stream all media into different rooms using either my two xbox 360's or my Ps3 across my wireless network and have just made Windows Media Player playlists for the mood.. i.e Party, Chillout, Alternative, Drum & Bass/dubstep etc etc.. its pretty easy.

It'll take you FOREVER to burn/Convert DVD's to Data files however, so I hope you have patience haha.

I've sent an email off to the geeks we use and no doubt they will come back with some system with specs that will go way over my head. I was really hoping there was a simple 'one box' solution. Another mate is a massive apple fanboi and he has some stupid setup at his place and streams to his ifail and the rest so just waiting to hear back from him aswell.

brendon,

this whole smart home/retic controller/ac controller thing would be way easier to do with a PLC (programmable logic controller). It's very doable and i've been thinking of doing it myself, just can't find a donor PLC at the moment (ie a job to pay for one).

it might not be everyone's cup of tea but a touch panel + plc setup would look great imo and best of all programming these is easy (well i know how and i still owe you a favour)

I have got lots of jobs I am sure need something like this. I am sure we can do a deal for 2! I forgot about that. I get toyota gold fleet now. Silver got me $2k off the latest cruiser but gold was $4400. Great success.

I spoke to my mate that is epic apple fanboi and he was going on about some apple mini and I could run everything through that. Certainly sounded promising Could use an ipod touch or ipad as the remote. dont know how easy it is yet as he was saying you buy the unit, then the extra hard drives then this adapter then this usb thingy and then this and then that and being apple you would hope it would all plug and play but I really want something that has everything in the box and I can spend a weekend running cables and tuning it in with a couple of mates and half a pallet of beer.

As long as the cameras are not consealed ones
and not in bathrooms then you should not have a problem.

Startserve is an easy way to distribute around the house. though keep in mind the modulators dont send VGA/DVI and Also dont send high def.
you get a standard analouge signal sent via them. Via a RCA input.

I would say go for a media centre style setup at the tv , which you can then network back to your main pc if you wish.

Best result for viewing cameras remotly is a seperate CCTV System plugged directly into the router. Which then can be viewed all around the world.
Can even send you an email if it detects motion in your bedroom etc.
