Does not bark but has a very loud howl and growl - hates darker skinned people and will growl when any are anywhere near us when walking.

Will not protect the property but that is why we have an alarm but has and will protect anyone in the family from anything.
My friend had a Mal and did nothing while she slept and had her house robbed. Don't get me wrong as they are a good dog like all dog breeds, but as i was saying to have a guard dog requires proper training

+1 for training. Other thing ppl forget to mention is you want on your front door, or letterbox a sign saying '' trespassers will be prosecuted. That way when the dog does what it's supposed to and bites an intruder, they can't ''make'' you put the dog down, as the ppl were warned before. Beware of dog stickers and the likes just admit that you know your dog is dangerous and may bite, and that gives them free ticket in court to demand you put your dog down. As screwed up as that sounds. Thank you to all my friends in the k9 friendly world for that advice. Only other thing i have to add after working k9 security with my own k9... sabe as he's know by friends... small horse as he's known by passes by ( 6 year old sable german shepherd) shepherds are one of the most loyal and friendly dogs - any dog will defend / gaurd your property, as long as you spend the time to bond with it. The better the bond with the dog, the better gaurd dog it will be. As ppl have said before though, by a dog that will fit the space, not a dog that has no room to move.

a few larger breeds have hip displacure problems, rottweiller and german shepards as examples.

I have 2 dobermans, they as a breed do not usually have problems.

what ever you get, don't let it be overweight.

unfortunately too many people think a that a heavier dog is more scary, but it is just an unhealthy dog that is likely to suffer heart problems.

My 2 dobermans are really good with my 15 month daughter, and with visitors while we are home.

I would not recommend trying to visit if we weren't home though.

Every pedigree breed has their own genetically inherited issues - Dobermans are not excluded from this. Staffies have L-2 HGA, skin allergies and possible hip dysplasia to name a couple.

Likewise, some people think a heavy / bulldoggy looking Staffy looks mean & tough, however you are just asking for health / joint issues in the long run. I have known a couple of staffies to do ACL's also, as they can be a hypo breed known to do 360's on the spot fetching things. Carrying extra weight amplifies the potential.

Like anything, do thorough research before buying. If buying pedigree, be careful of breeders selling dogs on contracts....dodgy fuckers.
