I know you are talking about the extreme though, something above a 4 digit budget.

Don't forget monster cables and equally expensive speaking wiring!

Well like anything, a decent home theatre setup is only as good as it's weakest link and you'd be surprised how many people buy killer speakers, amps etc and then use crap wiring (both speaker wiring and interconnects) or cheap banana connectors.

And trust me, Monster cables while being decent entry level cables are not expensive by any stretch, and as with most things hi-fi, choice of brands etc is very subjective and a lot of people will go with brands or knock other brands purely based on what a mates mates mate might have said one day while high

In case anyone is interested, my personal choices for cables are:

Speaker cable: http://www.qed.co.uk/174/gb/product/...xt_bi-wire.htm

or http://www.qed.co.uk/184/gb/product/...revelation.htm

HDMI cable (1.4): http://www.qed.co.uk/111/gb/product/reference/hdmi.htm

or if you are serious about your home theatre - http://www.vandenhul.com/p_B40AK.aspx

Analogue interconnects (only of use if you have a Sony ES level or above SACD player, S-Master Pro Digital AMP & speakers to match): http://www.highendcable.co.uk/chord_...erconnects.htm

Of course, I was being facetious. There are plenty of people who go to Harvey Norman, buy a $500 H/T receiver and then purchase a $200 Monster HDMI cable thinking it's going to be better than a $25 cable you can get off Ebay.

In my opinion, sub $100 cables (and you can even argue against paying that for connectors) will suffice for most applications. If people think paying $200-$500 (and beyond) for cables for use with entry-mid level components and speakers for example, then... well I think they're fools.

If you're shelling out 10k for speakers and using high-end audio components, sure.

A $20 HDMI cable will do the same as a $200 HDMI cable, correct?
Speaker wire is a different thing...

HDMI is purely digital... 0's and 1's. The cheapest of the cheap cable will perform the same as the most expensive gold plated cable out there.

Best bang for buck system I found when in a similar position to you 3 months ago was this:
http://www.sony.com.au/product/ht-ddw7500

I paid $980 and for what it is (Sony ), it does well.

Together with my Samsung 52" 5 series LCD, it's a great system for less than $3k.
i have an older version of this system (mines 6.2) and its great. particularly for racing games on ps3, coz it can go really loud

Hit the nail on the head there dude, heard this heaps from harvey norman and retravision, advised my brother and i just to get a samsung lcd tv as your wasting that extra grand or so on sonys name.

crazy
Having a few different systems in the past, bose is by far the best quality system I have heard and in my opinion is worth every cent, after listening to bose for live concert dvds and comparing them to a sony or samsung system, you feel like your listening to shit with the sony and samsung.

I agree Sony is overpriced mate, but Samsung is by no means crap.

Specially considering they tower the manufactoring of most brands you pay massive markups on?
