IMO best look for a tank is a setup like this one, BUTT with black rock for the floor.. looks soooo good, and you get the random little blue shiny ones. if i could take a pic of my mates I would, but havent seen him in a while, but i've never seen a freshwater tank look soo good.. ill try find a pic

This is a photo of a tank similar size to my tank i am getting.
with the same ship in it. Which gives an idea to size i have to play with.
its the sides of the ship i am wanting to fill.

Ah, the substrate.
I used to use black substrate. Looks okay at first and really brings out the colour in some fish but it's not very natural looking.

You mentioned limestone? Does your friend have limestone in a planted tank?

Limestone is fine for Cichlid tanks and Brackish water (slightly salty) and associated species of fish, but it's really no good for freshwater, planted tanks. You want to keep a stable, neutral (or slightly acidic) ph, and your kh (carbonate hardness) reasonably soft.

Limestone is a soft rock which breaks down over time and releases shitloads of calcium carbonate into the water. No good for your water parameters, and many species of fish and plants.

How long has your friend had the pictured tank set up for?
