LOL Poor bloody FIFO workers working half a year and getting paid more then the majority of Aus.....................I will take your FIFO holiday and trade you my 14 hour days. Occasionally I get a Saturday or Sunday where I don't do any work.

I don't know which mine or company you guys work for or have first hand exp with, but majority of workers do need some minimum skills, eg tech skills set.
Cleaners are the minority. Cooks do need to have some skills, even the kitchen hands.
It pays well but at an expense obviously hence the higher pay
But when you count the per hr rate, it's not a massive jump. The tax break helps in some cases, with the free accommodation. But if you don't make good use of the extra cash, you've just wasted the effort and sacrifice

We still do long days mate. I leave my room at 04:30 and dont get back until 19:00. You try working a full day in the pitch dark breathing in dust and fumes and see how good you feel afterwards. And don't get me started on what it's like to be away from your loved ones every night.

But you know what, all the whines aside I still count myself lucky and wouldn't have it any other way. Complaining is just our way of relieving the tensions, if we didnt love it we wouldnt be doing it because no amount money is worth it if you don't.

Edit: And fuck you for the centrelink comment. I graduated with honours after paying my way every step. I'll take my 6 figure salary and fucking enjoy it...I'll pass on the neck tatts though.

And at the end of the day, that's what it's about. Like any "regular" job.

No one is forcing me to work 28days/336hrs straight. I do it because I enjoy the industry, and have an end goal which isn't going to happen if I don't work for it.

A) Do the daily 9-5 grind, hoping I win lotto so I can provide a better life for my family, or
B) Do everything in my control to make happen.

Personally, I'd choose option B every time.
