Their prices on Yamaha and paradigm gear are hard to beat.

Ok thanks to all this will give me a good start

Is there any "program" that you can put your room size and layout in and it will spit out speaker sizing for you or at least relative sizes between centre, fronts and rears? Or is that just a tuning arrangement once its all together.

Re rears, the missus hates the clutter of all my gear so now have the surrounds (7.1) cut into the ceiling. As it is a living room as well it does definitely reduce the amount the AV gear can take over the room.

Recently upgraded my Aarons to Monitor Audio. Not a massive step forward to be honest. Still have the Aarons (black) in the shed and will sell for cheap. Are in perfect working order and punch hard. Welcome to take em and try them.
Blaise,

I might have a look at those as I am in the same boat all the gear is in the living room so I don't need massive towers nor do I have the space for them.

As you can see the tv is on a joinery wall in the middle of the room, all the av gear is in the veneer cabinet on the right.

Centre channel and fronts live on the tv wall so I am limited by space.

Now one curveball I can throw in is I built in boxes into the wall the tv is on for speakers to be cut into the timber veneer.

So is it worth buying individual speakers ie for fronts the woofers, mids and tweeters? And installing them into the speaker boxes in the tv wall? this may be 1 - more cost effective 2 - more difficult as matching the speakers may be harder.

Thoughts?

You can run inefficient speakers and efficient speakers at the same SPL. You just need a bigger wattage to get an inefficient speaker at the same SPL as an inefficient speaker.
I agree with you the way I wrote it wasn't quite the way it is in my head, but the same as what you said.
With an inefficient speaker or too large a speaker, for the right room/application, at low volumes you will get the sound that takes low amounts of power, the high range, and not much low range produced, which is what takes the power...??

That's a lot of dicking around and means you would really want to be building your own speaker cabinets for the rear so that they all match. Another downfall is when buying individual drivers and kits, you can't audition them. You're relying on brand reputation and anecdotal evidence from electronic geeks and tinkerers (ie. other people's ears).

Personally I'd be buying a couple of slim towers and placing them either side of that wall. I was going to suggest bookshelf fronts on some nice stands but they may not last very long with that size dog in the house. At least the towers won't be pushed over. I'd then make a small box (or shelf?) or buy a small matching table to put under the TV to place the centre channel on.

That site says they arent shielded, so you probably wouldnt want them next to the tv

With that half wall with all that open space behind it, hard floors & high ceilings I can only imagine how weird it would sound accoustically

You couldnt ditch the half wall and mount the tv on another wall in there?

^^^^^ ahh no the joinery will not be changing - if you knoew how muc the joinery and lounge cost you wouldn't be changing the layout either (and I'm a builder and paid cost!)
