NYC for at least a week, Yellowstone was awesome to see and the place we stayed was such a wonderful experience - Shoshone Lodge and Guest Ranch, near Cody WY & Yellowstone Park - check it out

Wouldn't recommend Miami, waste of time. Vegas is cool even if you don't gamble. San Diego is nice to relax and check out Sea World etc.

Regarding tickets to baseball and basketball - Stubhub Tickets at StubHub! Where Fans Buy and Sell Tickets is really good for getting last minute tickets to games. Variety of prices and range of seating locations.

Some really handy feedback so far, cheers gents!

Dave - why rent rather than buy? I'm guessing there would be less hassle and the car itself would be more reliable - I was mainly keen on the whole 'top gear' factor

Would love to swing past the Smithsonian Institution in Washington. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smithsonian_Institution

We have done a lot of driving across the US . Our last trip was from Ohio, newyork , Washington , Kansas , Colorado , Vegas then LA.
Places I loved were, San Francisco, sandiego, Fort Collins , Washington DC. Vegas.
We have done a lot of driving in winter, but make sure you get an all wheel drive. They can't drive in the snow, so many accidents .
Feel free to ask questions, we go over just about every year. There are so many good things to see and do . Make sure you check out the forums on nasioc as I have meet some great people from them, and also try and get to a car meet. Or try and time it with a rally America event and volunteer which I did for the stpr rally.

So far the plan is to fly into LA, hire a car and head up the coast to San Fran, across to Vegas, then Grand Canyon. From there we are undecided whether to take a route through the north or the south, to get to Washington DC/NYC/Boston.

When I travel I like to see the different landscapes, and see the less 'touristy' areas to get a better feel for the country and it's people. Obviously the cities on the coast will be a good taste of the tourist stuff, so figured I will want to make up for it across the middle.

Will want to mix a bit of camping etc into the middle somewhere to save some coin and also experience their outdoors a bit (to compare it to Aus!)
Undecided which of either the northern or the southern states would be good for this.
If we go north, we can hit Yellowstone and all the parks out that way.
If we go south, we can go through Arizona,Texas, Mississippi - which is also saving us a good 1000 miles and 10hrs of driving time.

If doing the Grand Canyon, can highly recommend taking a chopper. Get a great perspective of how big it is, also fly over hoover dam / lake mead etc and over vegas itself
we went with these guys
Las Vegas & Grand Canyon Helicopter Tours - Sundance Helicopters
Got the Skywalk in also which is worth it

If you are not doing a package like Burke, don't go the skywalk! Big ripoff , just google it. Keep driving to the South rim and stay there. Make time for Hoover dam also, there's also a new massive bridge that overlooks it which is worth walking over.
If you like landscapes, Yellowstone and Yosemite is a must. I wish I had time to go to Monument valley (think where Forrest gump stopped running).
I also did a 7 day cruise to Alaska departing from Vancouver BC returning to Seattle. Highly recommend to do it if you have time. Awesome landscapes.
Even the drive along the Oregon coast has spectacular views.

Unless you have several months, don't try to pack in too much . The USA is a big country. We spent 2 months there and only covered the north west, but we prefer travelling that way in our own time than whirlwind tour packages where you spend 10mins in each spot before moving on.
