Default Light Bar Experience / Options

Hi All,
As I continue to prep the rally car, I am looking into lighting options..
The Led light bars seem to be the way to go. Either mounted on bonnet or to the bumper..

Anyone had any experience on value for money, brands, or anything else valid to consider, or to avoid, etc? Seem to be lots on Scumtree, Ebay, 4x4 sites and seems to be big variances in cost...

Cheers peeps.

Ashley

Cheers Russ. What's the mounting feet like? I'll be looking to make it easily mountable and removable.. But strong... I want it all..... ;-)

Does an LED light bar throw the light as far as a couple of good spotties will? I have heard that the LED bars are bright as all shit, but only go a short distance forward...

I'm in the same boat as you, Ashley – looking at lights for McRae, Targa, and Barbs at night.
Essentially you'll get what you pay for in terms of build quality, light spread/focus/throw and output (lumens). Having said that, you will save some $$ because it's China-made and distributed.

I would think twice about installing a single bar as you can't adjust the outboard direction if the beam. A number of Targa competitors who fitted just one LED bar / fitted two but didn't adjust the outboard rotation said that they were great for distance and the area in front, but they couldn't see the apexes when they got near them because the lights were only focusing forward. So that's something to consider!

Perhaps a single large on the bonnet + two small ones down low, pointed outward (e.g. at 20º)?

This is an example of great quality but higher $$

Talking to Doug when I put lights on for rallysprint the advice was for traditional spotlights.
The LED's bars are apparently great for four-wheel driving but do not project over distance the same way spotlights will.
I ended up putting on 4 separate spots of 2 pencil beams and 2 spread beams, this gives me plenty of adjustment.

We used a light bar for targa and had no issues with distance, picked a dog running across the road at the end of a 400m straight no problem. Simon has tried an eBay and non eBay ones and hasnt put the eBay one back on since even though it has double the LEDs, the light out put is far less. Ill find out what it is and let you know.
The LED bar was that bright and had a decent spread that you didnt receive any extra light when the high beams of the car were turned on. We had it mounted to the number plate bolt holes.

Not that I've tried them but these might be worth a look, The Retrofit Source | Innovative Headlight Upgrades

I have an ironman one fitted to my 4wd.
It turns night to day with it's intensity, it's insane.

They come with a few spread and a few longer range beams, but as others have noted, it certainly doesn't compare in range to a decent spot lamp.
Very good bang for buck if you can get a good price.
My mate works for the ironman distributor and I got mine for $100 because it was a factory second with a couple of the led lights buggered (3 out of 18)

At the end of the day, you usually get what you pay for with product quality and warranty/support.

On our GC8 rally car we run a pair of ebay HID spotlights like these:
2pcs 55W 7 Inch HID Xenon Flood Beam Driving Lights SUV Jeep 4WD Spotlights 7" | eBay

Build quality is shit, but light output gives good distance and beam spread. Good enough to win the big night stage at Collie this year, with speeds of 180+km/h.
Our bar mounts to the chassis rails (where the bumper bolts in) mounts can be seen in the spotlight blanks in the pic.
It's not pretty, but works fine, with no vibration.
