I have driven a Nissan Pathfinder off road (mainly on the beach) and the 4wd switch on the dash is too easy to use. 2wd, 4h, 4l and auto which runs 2wd then activates 4wd when needed.
Only thing with the Pathfinder (I think the x-trails amy have similar engines) is that they are a bit thirsty around town.

I too am about to take the BCF lifestyle and 'start livin'. Lucky enough to have my parent's old Jackaroo. It will be nice to be able to explore a beach or track at will.

yeah.....Someone forgot to check their oil!

The only recalls were for:

1. crank angle sensor (part superseded to a new design)
2. Pre-Cat converter matrix crumbling (very few in Aus)
3. Fuel filler tube recall (sleeving supplied & fitted)

Scare monger much?

All makes, all model recalls listed here: Cars

According to that report he had it service 4 weeks ago and checked the oil 2 weeks ago. Dont think he is scare mongering. Also its a known fault. They call it Bore Washing. When the car has driven only a very short distance the injectors can leak causing the fuel to wash the oil off the oil ring on the piston. Very dodgy to me. http://baustralianxtrail.runboard.co...10#post2014498

I think i am pretty set on the xtrail from what i have been reading. Very close between that or the rav4.

Thanks for all feedback everyone!

New Grand Vitara ftw, but dunno about the older molders. Drove a new one recently as the mrs wants one and could not fault it, it'll be what we buy.

In regards to the Nissan, I hired a new Xtrail when I was in Broome in August and my only criticism would be it seemed very flat footed, ie. not enough ground clearance. The light steering didn't bother me and in fact, made it very good to zip around town, the new CVT box is great too. Again, don't have any knowledge on the older models though.

So this post is probably useless since you want a 2nd hand $15k one!!

Common occurrence in many makes, search cold start fouling or flooding. RX-7's were chronic for it.

Russ I (X Wifes' car) owned a CRV (04 I think) for a few years and found as far as a womens car and for city driving it was fantastic! Did not miss a beat. If you want to take it to the beach you'll need a winch though as they weren't built for off road. Apart from that the car didn't miss a beat. Although this car had all the trimmings every extra possible. As TJ said the basic CRV's are soulless!

My Siss has an X-Trail and lives in Kal, they take it and the bikes off road all the time and as far as I know it hasn't run into much troublr off road. They also drive it Kal>Perth regularly and it's solid as a rock.

X-Trail would be my overall choice.

Neighbour across the road from me took his X-trail in and traded it on another one. Tells me that it must be a decent car to go back for seconds!

Great advice guys! Thanks heaps! From what everyone is saying and i have been reading the xtrail is deffo winning for what i want.

The problem with the rav4 for me is it has a traction control that cant be turned off so when giving it stick on sand getting up a hill for instance they sense you sliding a bit and apply the brakes. I dont think that will be very good off road.

The xtrial with its switchable 4WD is deffo something that i like!

Once again though.. still hate that Cental Console!
