Really? Ok thanks for the tip. I thought the power was pretty good in the gv's.

Also didn't know that xtrails where 2 wheel drive. That would be good on fuel.

This is a GREAT thread, I am having a smiliar senario and my choices were Grand Vitara, Rav4, Forrester and a Sorrento.

Sorrento 4WD has high low range, a friend has one and they seem to enjoy it, he takes it on the beaches for beach fishing, from what I read they seem ok, taken a few for a drive and they drove pretty well, was a V6 but. Dont know if that is any help, but I will be keeping an eye on the thread, let us know how you go and what you end up with

RAV-4 FTW!

Brilliant little car, mum has the 2L 4cyl 5 speed, a 1998/1999 I am pretty sure, have taken it on the beach, pines, etch, it goes EVERYWHERE.

Good on fuel, they are a bit plain, but an awesome car!

Would highly recommend it, however, I have driven the X-trail, which had very light steering as above, but is great and smooth in manual though!

Test drive everything in your price range and pick the best and most suitable

Ford Explorers and Escapes are hopeless off road. My dad has pulled many of them out of not so boggy spots.

My g-parents used to have an older model Rav4 (6cyl I think) that they took everywhere and used to do the grey migration up north in towing their caravan. It never skipped a beat but they upgraded to a Prado about 8 years ago.
My dad reckons Nissan Pathfinders and Xtrails aren't too bad for a softroader.
