Starting out......sort of
I'm in the market for a new camera. I'm thinking a Nikon D7000 which suits me to a tee I think. I use a D3000 at work at the moment.
I'm looking at maybe something like this New NIKON D7000 DSLR 18-55 + 55-300 VR Twin Kits + 16GB (eBay item 170579050699 end time 10-Aug-11 20:34:22 AEST) : Cameras as a good starter but I may be inclined to get the body and then get some other lenses instead. Does anyone here have any good recommendations on places to go or sites to get them from? Also some pros and cons on some Nikon lenses. Cheers Dan.

Dad buys bulk stuff from B&H Photo Video Digital Cameras, Photography, Camcorders
Based in New York and the most unbelievable service ever. He bought a new Canon 1D that didn't work out of the box and it was replaced absolutely no questions asked incredible quickly. How do I know how much rubbish he buys? Because he invariably uses my credit card. Brendon

Sites above are quite popular as well as citiwide and digitalrev.
Maxsaver Provide Rock bottom price for the Camera Accessories and B+W/HOAY/Daisee Filters for genuine filters, so much cheaper than local. And Quality Camera Sales Australia for specialist stuff if you want to go local. Bit more expensive as its a bricks and mortar store. For choices in lenses, decide what kind of situations you will be using them in, your requirements and go from there. Do you want a walk around lens? Large zoom? Ultra wide? Prime with large aperture etc. My favourite lens I have is the canon 50mm f/1.8, not familar with what nikon has but they basically have everything canon has. Hope that helps edit: lol sounds like an advertisement, didn't know links converted themselves like that Last edited by gazlaz; 20-07-2011 at 08:07 PM. Reason: edit |

As contaversial as it might sound, I think the D7000 is possibly the best DSLR ever made. At least by Nikon.
Let me rephrase. For the price, you simply won't get a better camera. It's lighter, faster and quieter than any other Nikon ever made. It has the highest linear resolution of any Nikon DSLR, and more overall resolution than any other Nikon (aside from the D3 and possibly D700?) The low light/high ISO capabilities are almost as good as my FX D700. I'm sure you've read the reviews. It really is an awesome camera for the price. As for lenses, the focus motor in the body means it works with every AF lense made since 1986. If I was using a crop body, and money wasn't an issue, my wishlist would probably include: Prime - Nikkor AF-S 50mm f/1.4G Macro Prime - Nikon Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G AF-S VR Micro Standard Zoom - Nikkor AF-S 16-35mm f/4G ED VR Telephoto - Nikkor AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Wide Angle Zoom - Nikkor 12-24mm f/4G ED-IF AF-S

I have the Tamron 70-300 for my DX body, and I'm far from impressed. Then again, for the price, I can't really complain. If you're looking to save some cash, the Nikon 55-200mm VR has great reviews. I'd probably go something like that rather than a third party lens. Nikon 55-200mm VR

Generally, yes. But APS-C does have its advantages.
-The crop factor gives you a range advantage. And as such, you can get better depth of field, simply because you can be further away from the subject. Remember, a shot at 100mm on a crop sensor will appear as a 160mm shot. -Easier to auto-focus on an APC-S because the focus points are more spread out. -Less vignetting when using a full frame lense on a crop body. -A crop body, coupled with a full frame lense utilises only the best part of the lens. No matter how expensive you L-series or Nikon N lense is, the weakness is always the resolution in the corners. -Lighter If I was to get another backup body, it'd probably be a high end crop body.

... however you get less depth of focus
eg. (70-200mm | 5DmkII) - focal length @ 70mm, f2.8, subject 5m from you = 1.7m of focus (70-200mm | 50D) - focal length @ 70mm, f2.8, subject 5m from you = 1.0m of focus To get the same depth of focus, you'd need to stop down to f4.5 The advantages/disadvantages are entirely subject dependent.
