Thinking the manual or the flappy paddles and triptronic Jimmy?

How strong are the 5spd boxes on these John?

EVO 5 speed boxes are very strong. Not quite as strong as the STI 6 speeds though.

However if you were to break something on a EVO, it would likely be the transfer gears.

Kool wasnt sure as I remember someone over at evoOz saying the MR8's 6spd was pretty strong and since they changed to a 5spd on the 9 here onwards they weren't as strong as before.

Would have checked on evoOz but forgot my account details.

The 9 has the same 6spd as the 8MR as far as I'm aware...

But I am looking at a X, and leaning towards the flappy paddle option... It's the way of the future IMO, and perfect for a car that will be driven daily and spend most of it's time on the highway!

The JDM 8, 8MR, and worldwide release 9's has the 6 speeds.

They are the weaker of the boxes, but still incredibly strong. A good 450hp plus before you break one, and its usually the input shaft or transfer gear that goes, not the synchro like a WRX box.

The 5 speeds are strong because with the need for extra gear removed, the casings have more room to hold bigger shafts, synchros etc inside.

Ah ok must have been thinking of the ADM 8's then as they came with a 5spd yeah?

So is there little difference between the 8MR and the 9 then?

Only real difference between a 8MR and a 9 is the addition of MIVEC cam control to the 9.
