Sun 16th - Tuning Day for a bit of fun & to finish off a set of street tyres.

Before:

During:

After:

Reason:

Top rad hose getting fouled by thermo fan. Just not enough clearance. Fixed up now with a replacement hose and cutting it a bit better.

Only got 3 laps in before she dropped her load of green juice, thankfully identified immediately, and trayed out for repairs.

Yeah, as was I.

In other news, I was eyeballing a fairly tidy white 370awhp Evo 7 RS import today. Trying to resist the dark side.

Hmm.

*Could* be a head gasket on the out here guys. Appears, at least initially pre diagnosis, that under boost it may be leaking into the cooling system which is causing coolant to come out of the radiator cap. Kinda hard to tell at the moment. Not running rough, not pushing into overflow bottle, will double check the oil tomorrow, temperature remains stable, just leaving coolant marks around the radiator cap.

Could be an engine out, and new short motor etc, which to be honest, is a credit to this motor as it has lasted quite a while if that is in fact proven to be the case.

Only started thinking about this tonight, but if so, I think i'm going to get ASG to take care of business with the following as some form of package and let them just handle the whole thing.

Can't really be too bothered getting into the semantics of it all as it still is a street car, but essentially I think a brand new EJ207 with after market pistons and rods, would be a baseline.

Beyond that funds would start to come into play with regards to cams, valves, which I may or may not do depending on the coin.

Other option of course would be a used pallet EJ207 drop in, but undecided on that.

Any advice is appreciated, budget would be $6-8K i'd suggest.

Cheers!

If its just a head gasket why are getting a whole new short block? Surely its more economical to just give your current block a rebuild and add pistons/rods?

If it is, block is 15 years old - done it's fair share of K's. It's a 205 open deck with cast pistons. Would be a "while it's out" type situation, so add a new 207 and create a better base.

Given that mentality, and the proven crate EJ207, arguably changing the pistons and rods may not be required given the application.

Sounds like the position that I was in a couple years ago. STechnic did my build and ASG the tuning. Can't actually remember the exact pricing as I kept adding to my list!

You'd probably be looking at around 7-8k for a new bottom end with water pump, oil pump and new gaskets etc

Add 1-2k if you are looking to open up the heads for some cams and slight headwork (makes a bit of difference to your midrange)

With a VF34 and PW TMIC, it made a comfortable ~290ish hp, and it hasn't been given an easy life since, but without much drama apart from fuel surge when the tank is low.

It's a tough decision though. You can spend the money to put the car how you want it, or you can go the cheap fix, sell and buy something else. Whilst sometimes it may be smarter to sell, once you're attached to a car it becomes a matter of love

Although all the above said... if the HG isn't confirmed, I would remain optimistic.
Could just need a new cap. Or radiator. Replace them first (with genuine items) before talking engine builds!
