Especially to a vf43p20. Waste. Should have just put a billet wheel on your one and would have just as much response but way more top end than that old turbo.

Dan [GTI] 02-03-2016 07:17 PM
Can't believe you're changing the turbo! Was a sick car the way it was
It will still be a fast Forester, however only with a more balanced setup. The current turbo is more top-end heavy and leave more to be desired in the mid-range and response... but let me break it all down for you.
Especially to a vf43p20. Waste. Should have just put a billet wheel on your one and would have just as much response but way more top end than that old turbo.
A billet wheel will indeed give me more response and top end, but not a big enough decrease in lag for me to really consider it (yet). Plus the extra top end would be wasted on a 170,000KM EJ25 because I don't really think it is can push much more then the current 294HP @ 19PSI.

Here is two ASG graphs (11 months apart) of two Forester XT's, bottom is mine and the top is another with a VF34 P20, headers, intake, STI TMIC, etc:

The VF34 P20 makes 15HP less on roughly the same boost but has way more real estate under the curve. You only have to look at each plot and see where the VF34 P20 makes more power / torque and it takes the TD05 20G until 4,750RPM to finally overpower the VF.

For the stock motor (with this milage) the TD05 is a waste and you may be able to retune the car and get a little more out of the current set-up but after I spend the money doing that there is no guarantee it will be a much better.

I weighed up twin scrolls, everything from a VF36 to a billet wheel TD05 20G twin scroll (GTPS02T) but that is at least $1500 up to $2500 (not inc tuning).
- The VF36 would offer little or no improvement over the VF34 P20 and would incur roughly triple the cost.
- The GTPS02T would offer decent midrange gains and plus the large costs incurred would not result in proportional gains in the top end because as previously discussed it would be a waste on the stock motor.

If the car had a built motor or was getting one soon (which I was planning on until my partner hurt herself, had to have surgery and is now off work for a considerable stint... thank fuck for health insurance covering most of it) I would not be heading towards the VF combo. On a built motor with moderate cams it would likely be a much better suited turbo because of the improved breathing in the lower RPM and tougher internals to beat on in the higher RPM.

You can't argue with the numerous VF34 P20 Subarus making between 200 - 210KW on various dynes in Perth and I can't argue with several workshops whom have said that the VF won't be a huge downgrade and is a very good and reliable street and track combo.

I won't bore you with any more of my paragraphs, I will however get Maximum Motorsport to do a before and after power run on their (heart breaker) dyno and see the real difference.
I agree with Russ. But since you are, what are you doing with the external gate and screamer setup? I might be a little interested?
May be interested in selling, may also keep it to future proof myself incase the motor goes Dok Dok and I build a motor and have the capability to push more air and make more power safely. Will let you know when I decide.

TL;DR - small turbo isn't a clear downgrade because it is more suited to my purpose. I don't want a drag car or dyno queen, I want a relaible street and track car. Don't be lazy read.

Dan [GTI] 18-03-2016 02:34 PM

So have been lazy and busy planning a wedding (more funding then planning on my behalf...) so have had a good chat with Dan (Maximum Motorsports tuner) both on the phone and at a impromptu SOWA meet so that has got me pumped for the turbo swap and tune... and a 6 speed... and a engine rebuild... he sold me on lots of things but one step at a time so turbo first

I am only a 3Port EBC away from being 100% ready to have this done, but while the car is there I might lash out on a FE440 quick steering rack to replace my slow leak stock bus steering rack. I have also had a lot of alone time on the internet lately and have a serious case of RSI from scrolling through wheel threads so I can put semis on my Gravels for track use.

I am looking at Gramlight 57DR 18x9.5 +38 with RE003 245/45R18 all round. For the observant member you may note my Grids were the same size with 225/45R18, however they required a 5mm spacer to clear the brakes and the car was 10mm lower all round, and the front was my breaking point with the rubbing.

I chose 245/45 after looking at Jacks thread and the RE003 245/40's had a very very slight pull on a 9" rim, so I am hoping this will translate to a slight pull on with on a 9.5" but that is not guarantee.

This car is on 235/40R18 with 18x9.5 (+38);

To fit these bad boys the front will need an additional roll and a lift all round, and 5mm so the guards don't sit lower then the highest point of the tyres. The ride height really needs another 10mm rise all round to bring the control arms parallel with the road to optimise the suspension geometry.

To prove they can fitwithout becoming a member of stancenation ;)
Gramlight 57C6 - 18x9.5 +35 with 265/35R18

To be honest I am hoping that the straight (slight pull) of the 245/45 sidewall will allow me to run similar camber and have enough room for things to move independently and not destroy my tyres or gaurds. Also going to be honest and say that I mainly wrote this post to collate all my current wheel research info.

TL;DR - I have a wheel fetish (go check the offset thread to confirm) and I need a place to write all my hopes, dreams and wheel information so I can easily access it rather then digging through my phone every time

BIG fan of the 57DR's

The wheel I am looking at for the STI after the USA trip.

That fitment is perfect IMO, aggressive but still functional, I like.

Don't want tiny 225 tyres stretched on 9.5" rims like it did before, I might aswell keep my current setup.

Want 245/40 minimum, maybe even a 255/40 so I have a sidewall that is more vertical the horizontal ;)

Actually they are real replica TE37's mate :D still needed 5mm spacers to fit over the squeaky brakes.

Took the car out for a decent drive and blew out the cob-webs for the Forester Owner's (plus a few WRX losers) Easter Cruise.

Had a great afternoon and car drove without any faults, but only enforced my want for a more responsive set-up along the twisting roads in the hills.

So will be visiting Dan and the boys at Maximum Motorsport next week to book the car in for some TLC and tuning:
- Service (oil, plugs, Filter)
- VF34 P20 / Up Pipe install (with PERRIN Thermal blankets)
- 3 Port EBC to replace HKS standalone EBC.
- MMS ECUTEK Retune

Money pending I would also like:
- Quicker steering rack (FE440 preferably)
- 3" oval muffler to keep things civil

Then time to start saving for GRAMLIGHTS, 6 speed, EJ25 rebuild, Flex-Fuelling... I can always dream of having them all.
