side note on smelter question:
There are several still operating in Australia.
Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter
Port Pirie Smelter in South Australia
There are six primary aluminium smelters in Australia, namely Bell Bay (Tasmania), Boyne Island (QLD), Hydro Kurri Kurri (NSW), Point Henry (VIC), Portland.
There are some others I have not listed.
Bluescope and One Steel are still currently manufacturing steel in Australia.
Smorgans Steel recycle steel here still.

All of these operations are struggling due to high labour and input costs, and cheaper imports from China or even Korea.

Never mind the fact I can buy Aussie steel cheaper overseas than what they will sell it locally for...

[QUOTE=Rossco;629813]Is it "sorry day" again?

Please show me where the Aussie smelters are?
Please show me where the local manufacturers are?
Please show me your plan for Australian economic growth without resource exports?

OR Shut the fuck up.[/]

Interesting that you mention 'economic growth' as if that model ever existed at all outside of some economist's fantasy world. I suppose you rate a country using GDP as a guide which is another fantasy the market likes to use.

Australian aluminum smelters I believe will be planning their exit as their high power costs (30% of production / input costs) and introduced carbon tax have now made the chance of competing against Chinese smelters impossible.

Lad - without debating the merit, there is NO economic modelling that doesn't include growth used anywhere.

I agree the models are all based on growth rather than the reality that continued economic growth (or the continued growth of anything) is a complete fantasy.
