Will knocking off a cat cause the afr go off by that much?

U can download "knock detection" for ur torque app, it reads the knocking correction value from ecu.
Yes, Detonation breaks pistons, rings, conrods, valves.

Yes, any time you change the volumetric efficiency of an engine (in this case freeing up the exhaust breathing) your AFR's may swing outside what the ECU can compensate for.

The biggest mistake people make when having their car tuned is not installing gear to help monitor how safe everything is. I have boost, exhaust temp and oil temp. Yes they came with the car but they where on the shopping list for my wrx i had before. I also have a wideband AFR gauge ready to he installed when i get a chance to take the downpipe off to get a bung welded in. You hve to pay to play.

As long as you choose a quality tuner and make it clear that you want a safe tune you will ok.

However they weren't to know that at the time of tune the cat may have been partially blocked. Maybe it was blocked then or maybe it got blocked after, who knows. But perhaps with that information I would have had a different response from them.
Anyway like I said lesson learned.
Wow! Then that is completely crap! Sorry to hear mate! We take our tuners word for gospel and if they said it wasnt needed then to me that lays fault with them. They should have at least done a dyno run to check.

Detonation is very audible - especially when AFR's are as lean as the log shows.

Tuner input or not - if you hear ping get off the loud pedal immediately!

bear in mind there was a shitload of wind/cabin noise but thinking back to that moment in time I did hear something that must have been pinging. I've never heard it before so I didn't really know what it was at the time. But that sound is now etched in my memory

3 licenses on the boat then mate?

And that the possession limit is 2 days bag limit (2 x 8 = 16 crays in your freezer)?

Almost correct Rossco.
Possession limit is 24 crays per person.

Correct rexxxed, 24 per person at personal place of residence.

We also have 4 license's at our home, hence why we can always get 3 on the boat each day. Secondly we also give a lot away to friends and family, which is legal provided the bottom condition is adhered to.

"It is prohibited to sell or use recreationally caught rock lobster for any gain or reward (including barter or exchange for other goods or services)."

Coming from a family of commercial fisherman we always adhere to the licensing requirements and limits.
