05 WRX wagon ... $6750 (silver, broken windows, hail dents so bad on bonnet the scoop was broken)
Not a bad price for those wanted parts for upgrade or conversion!.

My 04 WRX should be in that list somewhere, pickles I think.

Be carefull when looking at the auctions, sometimes you can't insure them unless the damage is repaired, and the car will always have the fact it has been written off in its history. Also, if your car has been written off, they can't take it off you straight away if you don't want them too. You have 30 days or so.

In any case i'm exciting to pick up 'E4LUTION' sometime soon!

I think tha 05 is over priced. Realistically if it was not damaged it would be worth about $20k.

Being an 05 an average of 20 000 km per year = 100km.

I have not allowed for anything dodgy i.e. people wanting a chassis number to do a cut and shut.

If you wanted to strip it and assuming you dont put any value on your time you could expect to get the following:

engine / gearbox - $3 - 4 k
interior - $500
rear diff - $500

I reckon you would not get your money back.

some people love bidding stupid prices at car auctions. Last year i went to two mainhem fowles auctions looking for a 2 year old prado and some of the prices that people ended up bidding for an ex-mining 4wd were absolutely crazy...i added $5k to what they paid and got a brand new one

What about Habib? $2100 in parts ($500 bonnet, $500 hatch, 2x$200 fenders, 2x$200 doors, $100 in bog, $200 windshield). $5000 for some paint. $700 for rego / fees. $7200 final pickles cost (+6.6%). ~ 15000 final cost. Sell for 20k and make 5k.

How did you go with this? I'm hoping to buy my other Impreza back that got owned in the storm, but the buy back price is the key. If it's 20% of insured value (with HBF) then that's ok, but I'm hoping someone has been there, done that before I take it it to get assessed?

I've heard mixed stories. I know of some people buying back cars for ~50% value. I guess it depends on the insurer. I know of someone whose car was insured for $5700 and was written off. They (RAC) said buy it back for $4000. He lol'd and told em to shove it. Its currently going to auction at pickles :P

Two of my mates bought their cars back for 20% of insured value.
Both were offered this amount and it was not negotiable.

I'm not sure who they were insured with though. I can find out if needed.

I'm keen to know what people's experiences have been with HBF. If anyone has bought their car back or has asked about it, how much (20%, 30% etc) did you get offered?

Cheers,

Wrxpc

I think insurance companies will benefit from this in the end... Obviously all the write-offs mean new cars to be bought and new insurance. People with 3rd party may now consider comprehensive a little more. The insurance companies that have handed this well and given decent buy back values and minimal wait times will gain reputation and may get more people going to them instead. Obviously the ones who handled it bad will lose customers.

Word of mouth can be very strong, and judging from what I've read RAC haven't looked the best so far. Just Car seems to have done a good job.
