Default Airbag fault after wheel install... do'h!

Right, so I bought a Momo steering wheel off a forum member a week or so ago (cheers!), and installed it with a mate the other day. We went through step-by-step off a DIY install on another forum, making sure everything was in it's place and hooked up properly. We had the battery off, and once I turned it on, all was fine. Went for a drive, realised we hadn't aligned the wheels with the steering wheel, so pulled it all apart again, lined it up, put it all together (with the battery disconnected by taking the negative off).

That worked, went for a spin straight after without a drama, did an airport run last night with no problems.

I got in the car this morning, started it up, and went up my driveway. After a number of minutes, the 'Airbag' light on the dash would not turn off (this was not on last night). Unhooked the battery, pulled it apart, checked all the connections, put it together, turned the car on, airbag light was still on.

Any ideas? Car is a '98 Impreza GX.

There is 10 or 12 airbag fault codes for that model of Impreza. Take it to a dealership and get them to pull the code.

Correct me if I'm wrong John but do they not need to be reset every time an airbag is replaced.

Cheers,

Cheers,
They don't have to be reset, the control module does a system check every time the ignition is turned on, that why the light stays on for 7 sec's then goes off if there's no faults. If there was a fault and it was repaired the code does need to be cleared as it will be stored in memory but the light will go out. If the roll connectors broken the horn usually won't work, easy way to test. It is possible that it was broken when the wheel was replaced. But it is easier to get the fault code out otherwise you can waste a bit of time.

Nope, very minimal movements. I'll try the horn though.

Okay, horn does not work, and I remember now that there was a crack when I parked it last night after the airport run. So I've probably broken the rollconnector by putting too much torque on the centre nut.

Local workshop here I come (I guess)!

Some call it a 'clockspring'
It's easy to fug it up if you don't read the instructions printed on the switch when the wheel is off. Basically the rotary contact only has a limited amount of slack before it tightens up and it snaps the wiring inside.

Yeah, that's what I've done on my car and on my spare... <insert explicit here>

Looks like it's only a few screws to undo and replace. Not saying I'll do it myself, of course.

Airbag repairs should be left to professionals, they are a safety item, and in theory they could be dangerous.
