I spray painted my.rims from black to silver i just used a fine sand paper and sanded it all back ,put 2 coats of primer then 3 coats of silver spraypaint and it looks good for about 6 months and it was just a backyard job
Edit: whatever you do make sure you take the rims off because i was lazy i left them on the car and accidently sprayed on the brakes and they were scraping it off for days

^ What he said.
Id be practicing A LOT before you start spraying. Spray paint can be your friend or your worst enemy. Nothing looks worse than a paint job with run makes and dog hairs stuck all over it.

I painted a set of wheels for a mate a few months back... started by stripping them down to bare metal with paint stripper and a wire brush (they were clear-coated machined wheels which were peeling etc.), put a coat of etch primer on, 2x coats of colour (VHT black in this case) then 2-3 coats of clear on top. No issues getting tyres on etc, still look good now.
Tips would be to get the tyres off if possible (it's like $2.50 a pop, really no hassle) and the valves, sand absolutely everywhere possible with 800 grit sandpaper before primer, remove all flaky/damaged paint as best you can, and wipe all over with wax and grease remover before painting. Go light on the coats, might take you 3-4 to get solid colouring but it's worth it, and make sure the wheels are warm when painting - if you can put them under a heater after they're painted, that wouldn't hurt either. The finish tends to get ruined because of crap prep work (i.e. dust in the paint, grease on the surface, unsanded bits that peel), excessively heavy coats (runs, build-up in areas, shrinking of paint 'globs' which go wrinkly) or too hot/too cold surfaces which cause spotty matte finishes or peeling. |
