Default New Subaru WRX: first drive

'But it’s lost some of the fire in the belly that gave the WRX so much of its character.

Whereas previous WRX were lacklustre at lower revs before exploding into a surge of energy mid-way through the rev range, the new one is a lot more sensible and responsive across the entire rev range.'

'What the WRX has lost – or in some ways diluted – in terms of ‘Rex character’ it has made up with a more sensible demeanor'
'which appears to mean focussing more on professionals than the hoons who have often bought a Rex.'

WE all must be Hoon's Then.... thus we need to change the name of this website to Perth-Hoon's .com

Might be faster and more refined but it still looks like a homosexuals car. Would be a tough decision between a getz, MX5 or a new wrx.

Still, Wangara Subaru is just down the road.. Might be worth taking their demo for a drive to have a laugh!

"The $39,990 hatchback accelerates to 100km/h from rest in a claimed 5.8 seconds, just 0.1 second faster than the model it replaces."

1/10th of a second is SFA. Plus I'm sure if you drive it its probably more like 6.5 seconds it will depend on your gear changes.

The problem I think most of us have with it compared to the previous generation of WRX's is everthing has been refined down to the point that nothing particularily special stands out anymore if you purchase straight from the showroom floor. (Before mods)

Even the throbbing boxer note is very subdued.
Higher profile tyres (205/50R17)
Rolls more in corners..
Flatter, less supportive front seats... (For the oldies)
Still a bland interior compared to the competition...
Loss of that Turbo Kick... (Some will think this is good!)
Light and still vague steering feel (Compared to competitors)
Bland exterior....

Its turned Soft Cock to broaden its market appeal, but still fails. Unless you want AWD and a car thats a tad faster.

Maybe the $16k dearer STi will bring back some of the appeal.
I'm doubting it though!!

agreed there, gone very soft cock, does it still retain its bucket seats even??

the way it looks modern day performance cars are going down the toilet, even the evo 10 looks a bit pansy compared to the 9, although it does look slightly better then the wrx. Have to wait and see what the new skyline is like when it comes out, but i tell ya someone better bring out something impressive soon or its looking like a bleak future.

should of kept the 05 model going and just made tweaks to it, was the best modern model and will def become the cult classic soon. Unless subaru/mitsi change the way they are going, i could be looking at a totally different line of cars in the future.

I think if Subaru hadn't 'toned' down the WRX then they could have lost a lot of potential buyers. If you look at the $30 - $40K sports car range there is so much to choose from with all the in vogue hot hatches. If they had kept it as it is or made it more hardcore then they'd be restricted to selling it to 18 - 25 yr old males (generally speaking). So from a financial aspect it makes sense. At the end of the day Subaru are a business and if the customer wants to drive around in a pink 3 wheeled car then thats what they'll make. I think it will sell. I also think there needs to be an obvious difference between the WRX and the STI, one being a quick hatch that appeals to a broad range of people and the other a serious performance car aimed at a much smaller audience. Whereas before both cars were aimed at the same audience, now both models will cover a much wider one.

And I think the author of the article, Toby Hagon, shouldn't have used the word sensible. Sensible implies old and boring, what he means is it makes sense to eliminate the turbo lag. I mean lets be honest it's fun for a little bit, but overall turbo lag is f*cking awful and a pain to drive with.
