You've got an oiled pod, doesn't matter what AFM you have they will fuck it up, replacement cost of mine is over $700 but it still gets dirty with a HKS or std panel filter.
Another thing you can try is to wriggle all the electrical plugs with the motor idling to see if you have a bad connection somewhere.

Where is the coil pack located? I am using the OEM STi Water nozzle with the STi splitter, so it's an OEM spray setup pretty much running from the wind wiper bottle.

doubt the waterspray water would make it down to your coils (they are overplug setup on yours) not ontop of the manifold as on the early wrx's\sti's

if you are running an oiled pod with an afm you must have missed the subaru basics 101 class

it will be a fouled afm for sure, give it a clean with electrical circuit board/contact cleaner & put a dry pod on there (i have an apexi one) and you will be laughing, i'd almost put money on it

The air filter was just cleaned, the place i take are aware of not oiling the filter too much. Will get it inspected though to double check.

when you start upping the boost though its more likely to suck the oil off the filter no matter how little you use, i'd def start by cleaning the afm, although the damage may already be done if you've been using oiled filters for a while, bummer you don't have a 99/00 as i have a spare good afm sitting in my garage you could test it with

Pretty sure i have located the problem. Pulled the fuse for the waterspray and checked it wasn't working. Problem goneski .. Just need to figure out now why that's causing an electrical problem.

Yeah so the car has been getting looked at for a few days now, we have adjusted the plugs, checked all intake piping, read the ECU for any codes (none there) and the problem remained.

Tried a different AFM and the problem was even worse. Went back to the original after a good cleaning and it's okay now apparently, with a tiny flat spot up top. Does cleaning the AFM last for long before it screws up again? They are a $500+ part from Subaru brand new.

I am contemplating having ASG take a look at the tune to make sure everything is alright as well as running around on a dodgy AFM could spell disaster.

Ideally it would be better to invest that $500 into an ECU which doesn't rely on the AFM as it appears that even the AFM's on the newer rexies are not so tolerant with oiled pod filters, even if they are oiled very lightly. Sooner or later they die.

It might be something totally unrelated, better for you to get expert advice from a workshop.
