I think you will find anything that's a statutory write off will be very difficult to get licenced.

Statutory write offs can not be re licensed. Repairable write offs can. I dont know how they justify the difference between the two. I have seen some cars with no damage on them listed as stat write off, and seen others that have no chance of ever being anywhere near straight and they are listed as repairable.

Cost of repair > cost of car - cheaper to pay car out.

just to recap:

- You cannot import and register an American 2 door GX/RS in Australia. Plus they are LHD
- You cannot import and register a Japanese 2 door LX/R etc in Australia
- If there is a 2dr shell at JapWholesale etc, you will not be able to register it in Australia unless its an original ADM V5 STi.
- Cut and shuts are nasty jobs and I'd be avoiding them like the plague. it might be alright for old mustangs but i would never go near one on a modern car.

There's a difference between a cut & shut & a re body, cut & shut you basically join/weld two halves of a body together in the guts, re body like my hatch you have to unpick & retain the original floor, step weld the screen pillars & unpick the A pillars at the spot welds then re weld the new panels over the same spot welds, just as strong as the original provided it's done properly, the chances of putting a 2 door onto a 4 door front would be near on impossible to register.
To re body a car you have to get it inspected before hand & they make you use as many existing panels as possible & same same car, it's that tight now that you'd have more chance of pushing a coke bottle up a fly's arse............forget it.

well speaking to the techinical rep at DPI today he doesnt see a huge problem in me doing it. I am giving him details about both vehicles the wreck and the shell I have an eye on and he will get back to me.

Can anyone tell me where the body number is on a GC8, not the pop rivet vin plate on the firewall?/wheel well? but is there any other identification to prevent ghosting cars??

Firewall on drivers side near the brake booster is where the body stamp is. Thats all I have spotted on mine and I had the engine bay completely stripped. There is also the build date plate in the door shut on passenger side but dunno with the 2 door.
