Speak to Stace, (Tuna) I recall him telling me bits about the legalities. A bit of hard work and bullshit paperwork from what I can gather but would be worth it for a 2 door...

thanks mate. Yeah it is the right price and will be a track car.. but still want it rego'd for a few years if I can..
It wont be a fake V5 sti, more a race inspired 2 door with the v5 running gear and interior. |

There is no such thing as a 2 door GX in australia. The only 2 doors available are the 399 (or less) Version 5 STi's.
You cannot register a an import Impreza, no matter from Japan or France, what model, shape or variant. What you can do is purchase a 4 door Impreza LX/GX/RX (budget $4-8k for a good one) and install the running gear into that. Make sure you buy the same year-ish as your half cut (92-97 gear wont fit in a 98-00 shell as easily)

I know what you are saying. From what I had gathered, you use the body as a repair panel, and as you cant buy the body as a replacement part from subaru I was under the impression that you can use a secondhand shell to rebuild a damaged car. I have never done this so I am not 100% on this.

Correct, that's what I am lead to believe. the DPI was useless as normally trying to help me.. Im still searching, just hoping someone has an insight for me before I make any financial decisions.

Chassis replacement scheme? I know of cars done like this but don't know any specifics. I thought it was a loop hole that got closed.
If its a dark blue car at JWS then it won't be road registered in Aus. Essentialy what you are trying to do is reshell jap running gear with a jap shell, you still end up with a car you can't register.

Silvias, skylines and the like were never brought into Australia by Nissan. All of them are 'grey' imports.
This allows people to do the swaps and like and have them registered. You cannot import an Impreza and then register it (unless it is a personal import), since Subaru has brought them into the country. Either find a licenced Aus delivered 2 door shell and swap the parts in, or go 4 door.

You would need to have an engineer's report and DPI approval for a modification of that level.
Btw, what the heck is a GX STi ?

The ONLY 2 door shell you will be able to get fully road registered in Aust would be a V5 STi with an active Australian VIN. With any 2 door from any overseas country, unless you have owned and driven it yourself for 12 months in that country, you will (at best) only be able to get it B reg'd...and even that has its pitfalls.
You should not try and compare the Subaru situation with other brands, since it is quite different. |
