Teens are becoming more immature and irresponsable. Longer or more extensive training, possibly even going to the extent of raising the license age.

Ok...

Here we go.

I think it's a great idea, and initially I wasn't going to post, but I'll get in before the thread lock. (I can see this deteriorating and some people getting their noses out of joint).

Why? Because 1) statistics tell us p plate/younger drivers, are more likely to die in a motor vehicle accident. 2) insurance premiums back this up. 3) younger drivers are proven, to be more likely to 'race' others and suffer 'peer pressure' and 4) (this is more based on personal experience), probably 90% of people I see, behind me, ripping through traffic, then pulling alongside to race me, are p plate males, predominantly in older v8's, or turbo'ed nissans.

Now, before anyone flares up, I'm not pointing fingers are at any one person, the OP asks for a polled opinion, this is mine. I hope we can undertake an adult discussion about it.

Totally agree with you there, i was definitly not the best driver when i got my licence. Its way too easy to get your licence over here and not actually be competent enough to have one. I drove An 87 navara ute that would start to die if you tried to go over 100 for the first year of having my licence. It was only due to the ute being written off (at no fault of my own) that i got my wrx so early.

Agree pretty much with what sleepr says, and in all honesty, i'm on the road anywhere from between 12 to 14 hours a night while working, and the majority of ppl on the road you see making simplistic mistakes due to little experience on the road, is p platers... You can get all the training you want, which may help you to '' control'' a situation that may come to pass, but only time spent on the road will help you gain experience, correction reaction and reflex's to save your life, or other ppls.

I agree that it's all in driver attitude... but a kid with the 'wrong' attitude is gonna be less harmful in a getz than a v8/skyline etc.

Kids should learn the basics of the road before jumping into a powerful car. A car is like a weapon, you can't just pick up a machine gun and use it properly. You need to learn in a controlled environment, with something more down-sized.

Personally I waited until I was off my P plates before I drove anything more powerful than a 4cyl NA - because I knew I would be putting myself and others at risk with the low amount of experience I'd had.
I'd spun out my little corolla a few times fanging around a corner - without injury etc... I'd hate to imagine how it would've been learning from these kinda mistakes etc in a high powered vehicle...

personally, since i dont have to drive with p plates now,
i dont mind what restrictions they impose. providing we dont see p platers driving bunky failing drum braked eh-holdens.

Driver training will make them think they now know what they're doing
and try to push the limits more but this doesn't apply to all P platers
just the majority.

Restriction of power is a start in the right direction IMO.

Off topic, how do you use a machine gun safely? It's designed to kill people...

On topic, teenagers die. It's part of natural selection. Same as the rest of the road toll. The only way to stop people dying is to wrap people in cotton wool, sit them on the couch, no smokes, no beer, pump them 100% pure atmosphere, and then, after all that work, they'll die.

People die, its part of LIFE, it hurts for your family, but sooner or later the death of person x occurs. I don't think im fully getting my thoughts on the subject across, but it's a start.

it is all about attitude, thats why they buy v8's to do fully sic skidz.

the statistics state that 1 in 12 fatal crashes involves a p-plater. seriously. 1 in 12. so the other 11 is made up of motorists 19-80. So why not just ban performance cars from everyone?
if you are silly enough to do something you know you shouldnt and kill yourself i dont see why the rest of the motoring community has to suffer, and besides it just means one less idiot on the roads anyway. There are places that you can go to do fun stuff like this in a safe way. (motorplex, barbs, collie)

And what aussies call driver training is a pretty piss weak effort, and Common Courtesy can be taught quite easily. like KEEP LEFT unless overtaking (this is something the entire rest of the world understands except western australia) , dont overtake on a double white line ( i see this more and more every time i go bush)
everyone in perth needs to take a chill pill before they get behind the wheel because this poor behavior and lack of respect is a vicious cycle and it is escalating very quickly.

I love statistics:

"A 17-year-old driver with a P1 licence is about four times
more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than a driver
aged 26 or older.

The involvement of young drivers in late night and early
morning fatal crashes is significantly higher.
Of the 96 P plate drivers
aged under 26 who were involved in fatal crashes from
2001 to 2003, 33% crashed between 10pm and 5am.This
compared with 14% of drivers aged 26 years and over.

Young drivers with a P licence are six times more likely
to be involved in a fatal crash between 10pm and 5am
than other drivers.
The over-involvement of young drivers is highest on
Friday and Saturday nights. However, young drivers are
also over-represented on other nights of the week.

Within the over-representation of young people in
crashes, males stand out as a concern. Males make up
79% of the drivers under 26 involved in fatal crashes."
