i'm using 15w40 Mobil Delvac, a lot of the rexnet guys are using it as it has great protection properties for boxers. put it this way, porsche use 15w50 for their boxers. 5w30 is way too thin and the viscosity is too high so on cold starts the cars bearings are worn more.

There was an article somewhere that explains the hot/cold SAE ratings, what the pressure should be approximately and how the viscosity impacts it.
I have been using 10w40 Motul 300V, but I'll try Mobile 1 5w50 for the next oil change (in about 6months/5000kms). What the conclusion was in that article (correct or not), most oils are too thick when cold, but a lot of them are too thin when hot, ie. 5w30 is not thin/thick enough. Adi |

The 5W part refers to the viscosity when 'cold' i.e. under operating temp of 100 deg C.
The part following (i.e. the 50 in 5W50) is the viscosity when at operating temp. Multigrade oils like this allow for better lubrication at start up since people don't warm cars up prior to use anymore. It's turn the key and go. If you want to know what oil to put in your car... Read the manual! Subaru engineers know more about these engines than any of us internet keyboard warriors.

So u r saying that the oil gets thicker as it warms up??
Interesting |

Is it ment to be the other way round. as the car warms up heats the oil and the oil thins out.

A multigrade oil like 5W50 will act like a thin 5 oil when it is cold, then like a thick 50 weight oil when it is hot. This way it will lubricate properly from startup without thinning too much once the engine is hot.

Read this from end to end and you'll never need another oil question:
http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/faq...=haas_articles I read it through, then put in what my handbook said. (10w40 for my MY99)
