Sell the lux and buy another STI Kym. Dont need a track car unless your doing propper circuit work regularly. |

Not selling the lux - it's in too good condition, and I love it to bits.
The mrs has given me the green light to sell her commodore I bought for her and buy an STI, but I was hesitant about taking 'her' car out to the track, coz if I break it, I have to fix it ASAP. If it's a gc8 shitter, it can sit in the garage for a few months whilst I gather parts and funds... |

Kym,
Before you decide what car to buy you need to decide how hard you want to go. You are never going to win anything in a super low budget GC8 but that might not be what you are after. Also you need to think about the running costs. If you want to be competitive you will need to budget around $4 / km for tyres, $0.80c / km for fuel(U98), $2 / km for brakes. My point is those are just consumable costs and will be basically the same for a MY11 Spec C or a MY95 WRX. IMHO do NOT buy a bunky b reg track car unless you can afford to spend many times what you paid for it fixing it up and keeping it going. Go and buy the best road car you can afford and be happy to come midfield. Brendon

is your wagon a daily Russ? thats the sort of car you want kymbo. Pretty much ready to go, nothing to spend. Has handled collie, skidpan days etc and survived for the trip home. Guess it's a waiting game, the right car will pop up eventually!

being serious, this is a difficult thing to get your head around.
i pulled out from buying another car from jws and got my deposit back last week, chiefly among the fact that its super hard to get anything out at the moment, unless of course you disect the thing in half second is the endless money pit the thing becomes after the fact. 10+ years old out of japan is going to require a fair amount of tlc just to get it to a standard you will be happy with, let alone the cost of dedicated motorsport parts chiefly among suspension, wheels and ecu change. the 9 grand ra bunky turns into a 30+ turn key skidpan car that you can't drive on the street. imho an honest adm with good history is a better thing to get, best of all, its something you could drive to the shops and back if the need is there for that kind of thing. good tyres, odd swaybar and your out racing that weekend. set aside a little bit of money, as you get better out there, start adding other bits and pieces that come up on here from time to time, its a recipe that has worked for ages so it wouldn't be any different now! |
