The idea was, I just want a car I can have fun in (at skid pan days - maybe something else more serious/competitive if I prove to be any good) and if it breaks, I can fix up in my own time. But I can see how that could end up being costly (207 + gearbox = cya $10k) Thanks for those tips Brendon, that's helpful.

Maybe I just sell the commodore, buy the wife an STI that I can take to skidpans and have fun in, and just prey I don't break it!

Wont brake a decent sti at the skidpan! No more than 200kw atw and you have a fantastic car! Ala mine.

An 02 Sti with mild mods shouldnt explode with simply skidpan work.. if it does it has other issues.

I'd personally be going for this Kym, unless you plan on doing a proper build on a GC in the future (fresh 207 + 6 spd).
Double the initial money but a better car for less in the long run.
Also you're the bug poster boy
EDIT: and coming from a 6 spd you will destroy a 5 spd in no time

L2shift

5 speeds are fine. 260hp atw for 5 years, and 320hp for the last year, with no problems at all. I'm not alone either.

True.

02 STI or similar spec and instead of modding it for the first year, save and buy a ~2k bunky for if / when it shits itself.

On the street agreed. Mine held together for longer than I expected but I blitzed mine on dry bitumen limiter launching on hot r spec tyres.

I would of put in a 6 speed if I was allowed to but alas rules are rules.
