Didn't someone on here get a full STI drivetrain including the motor and 6 speed and brembo's for around the $10k mark?

On second thoughts it might be cheaper to fix the car up with the minimum and sell it and then just buy a full bug eye STI for $30k

try jap wholesale for front cut... i am sure if you have a bit of mechanical knowledge you can suss out most bits involved...
i am in the process of doing this conversion to my GF4. If you can get a cut of the same year and model you should be able to do it no worries...
Al at jap wholesale is pretty good to, i asked him about getting a cut after i had my engine, and he said he could get a matching diff and exhaust etc in the package if i wanted to. Also if you get same model cut just tell them you need it with the bonnet and you should have nearly everything...

That was also foxey whos parting out his gc8 that was stolen and recovered.

Although, yeah, it would probably be alot easier to simply fix it and sell it. Then get a 02 STI. which can be had these days for under $30K.

It would be easier, there's no question. Money is the limiting factor, since to fix & sell my RS is a zero-sum game: cost of fixing + balance of loan = value of car.

Hmmm maybe front cut is the way to go.... front brakes, engine, ecu. Swap it all over.

Then later get the gearbox back parts.

That's the route I'm investigating, although as Jester said the front brakes may not fit inside the 16" stock rims on the RS.

I'd probably try to do the rear diff at the same time, but I would have thought the rest of the drivetrain could handle it - it's only going from 112 to 160kW, and 223 to 292Nm.

Thanks for the discussion so far guys, it's all helping clarify the process.

Just be very careful you consider everything before you decide to go ahead. You might be building a money pit for yourself. jester should know how much a conversion costs including all the things you forget about.

The strength of the diff isnt so much the problem, sure you'd probably want to replace it eventually, but its more the diff's ratio needs to match the gearbox that you get with your half cut. not to mention (but this is needed for both options) genuine rad fluid, engine oil, gearbox oil, diff oil, gaskets ($$$) its also worth while doing a service on either motor while its out (oil filter, timing belt, water pump etc)

Yeah - that's why I'm making this thread now, rather than in 2 months when I post up "Crap, I forgot to buy <obscure part #4123>" and everyone says "...duh?" I know the conversion is possible, but I also know it's not something you do in a weekend over a beer or two.

This is all research, and at the end of the day I may well take the easier route and install a 2.5 (if Jester can track one down for me) or rebuild this motor (if he can't). But I'd like to be able to say "yeah, it would have been cool, but here's the reasons why not."

the other thing to look at is if you get a front cut without a bonnet, it might not be much difference price wise to get a front mount kit and just keep your original bonnet on, sleeper style...
