Has the owner agreed to replace it? Or do you just assume he's going to?

I'm gonna get it looked at, then talk to the previous owner. It has a service history of having gearbox problems. I rung the guy who services it and he said it had problems with the installation if the short shift kit because the guy who put the kit on fucked it up. So the service guy tightens up some bolts and it stopped the wining noise. And I meant 9000 for dcc.. Will just throw another 5spd in it and put some Ppgs in later on down the track

"put some PPG's in later" - SURE because that's cheaper than a 6 speed.....

You are aware that just the 1st to 4th Helical Cut Synchro Gearset alone is about $4700 right and that it's rated to 400 hp?

Then if you want it to survive with 450 hp you'll need to add:

Subaru WRX 5spd Billet Selector Fork - 1/2 $405.00
Subaru WRX 5spd Billet Selector Fork - 3/4 $405.00
Subaru WRX 5spd Interlocker $830.00
Transfer gear set $xxxx
Tarmac centre diff $????

Add to that the labour for someone to do the set up & shimming correctly and R&R the box to the car.

You do the math.......

A short shifter is simply a metal rod with a relocated point of leverage - no way it can induce geabox noise.
Smashing the shit out of the gear changes fast & furious style is what fucks boxes.

You need to be realistic - the old owner is never going to front for any gearbox work after you've purchased the car 'warts and all' - unless you wrote up a caveat at the time of laying down your cash.

Subaru gearboxes are never silent in operation, they all whine and graunch to some extent.

I'd be dropping the current gearbox oil and refilling with Redline lightweight shock proof.

excuse my lack of knowledge... but, is lightweight for the gearbox and heavyweight for the diffs? or can heavyweight go in the gearbox too and vice versa?
