No need to sound like a smart arse mate ive had my licence for long than you could walk.

I've never ran a red light or lost my licence for what it's worth.

I just think its a bit crap that you can say good by to your licence for one offense. "a red light is three points" yet you can speed and get away with it.

I wasn't trying to be a smart ass, not everybody looses their license or has it cancelled for X amount of time, only the P platers do. Running a red light can get some body killed. A person was killed 5 years ago at an intersection near me because someone ran a red light a smashed straight into the driver's door coming from the green light side.

Put it in perspective, running a red light could potentially injure someone or end up killing someone, I think people need to not take their license for granted. Those on their P plates should earn their full license, and if they are goind to run red lights they deserve to have their license cancelled.

That's my opinion anyways, I have 0 sypathy towards people who run red lights. It's fucking dangerous and inconsiderate to the other people on the road, just for the sake of saving a few minutes of time.

I don't see how not losing a demerit point is being a smart ass?

Personally, I don't know how many points I have lost - not because it's too many to count, nor because I don't care.

I got pinged once years ago on the drive from Laverton to Kalgoorlie... First stop in town was the Kal post office to pay the fine.

The demerits didn't matter because I learnt my lesson - not to brake road rules to the extent of attracting any attention or causing an unnecessary hazard, and subsequently I haven't, so never needed to count how many I had left to lose.

NOT to be a smart ass or know it all (not that I don't expect to be called both)...

Forum (noun): a medium of open discussion or expression of ideas.

Fair enough, so take it to the Off Topic Discussion threads
Oh, wait...

Incidentally, first reply to include opinions and not statement of fact directly related to answering the initial question:

I've been hit twice this year by people blatantly ignoring basic road rules, so yeah, I think a discussion on this topic is a good thing.

I also think that not losing your license or even demerit points is a damn good thing and something to be proud of, much more so than getting away with wriggling out of them on a technicality or working out what's the maximum you can break the law by to not lose your license.

I think we should encourage the discussions accordingly, and as the responsible adults, and not the "kids who think they know everything", apply this to the general culture of the group too.

Consider that everyone on here uses the same roads your children travel.

If you want to push the limits, take it to a track day.
