Default New pot laws in WA

Dopes to feel the heat under new pot laws | Perth Now

So what does the PWRX community think?

I for one am not really affected, but it still makes me angry to see the decision the government has made on this controversial topic.

I can admit that I have tried pot before, but not really my thing. Apparently it is a gateway drug - I tried it when I was drunk - what does this say about alcohol??? Oh, but the government earns a shitload from the liquor industry, so it's ok.

Smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol are more harmful, more dangerous, and more prevalent in our society, yet the laws are being made to incriminate the minority. Typical draconian government. I'm fairly sure that the leading causes of death in WA would be related to smoking or alcohol.

With an under-funded and under-staffed police force, who will be enforcing these new laws? And with prisons crowded as it is, where are these 'dangerous potheads' going to be locked up?

Organized crime will benefit, as less minorities will be self-producing. Bikies and the like will be laughing all the way to the bank.

Kids will move onto harder, dangerous drugs, which will be more readily available than weed. A similar situation would be the recent 'ecstasy crackdown', where the supply of ecstasy was cut dramatically in Perth. Users moved on to harder, more available drugs for their party time like crack.

I for one would prefer my own kids to try weed as opposed to dexies, acid, ecstasy, crack, heroin...And let's face it - young people are gonna want to try things, or find an alternative to alcohol to get f***ed up.

Reminds me of prohibition.

I can't really see any benefits...

I am yet to see an aggressive stoner.

How many drunks do you see glasssing people for no reason?

How many crackheads get into fights for the sake of a fight?

Yet the quiet little stoners probably too baked to even get up and go out at night. Don't really see how he is a problem. I just don't see how this is going to help anyone.

Never taken drugs in my life, couldnt give a shit.

Having said that the governments will never come hard on alcohol.

1. Tax = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

2. Your average politican is very likely to have a few glasses of wine at parliament house on a Friday before driving home, as opposed to a spliff.

It's just Rob Johnston making some more money.

Speed cameras are nearly at every intersection, so now he has to up the income stream from other avenues.

Anyway it doesn't bother me what they make the fines to be, it is illegal and all these 'it's illegal, but if you have X amount, it's not' is just crap imo.

The problem I have with pot and any other drugs is there is no standard measure. Have 1 standard drink of beer and you know where you are in relation to driving legally. Have 1 joint/tab and who knows when you will be legally sober enough to jump behind the wheel.

IMO it would be easy for the government to legalize and tax pot.

Benefits would include:
- significant reduction in organised crime
- tax money for gov
- more stoners = less trouble
- availability of pot will defeat the need for people to seek drugs like acid, ecstasy etc
- less resources spent enforcing a pointless law

Win-win situation

Good point.

But I'm sure that studies/research could define this. If weed was being mass-produced and sold legally, each strain/type etc could be analyzed to produce this kind of information, and labelled similar to alcohol.

The United States has been spending around $70 billion a year worldwide for the last 40 years, for a total of $2.5 trillion, on drug prohibition - what have they got to show for it and is anyone actually benefiting from this war? Imagine if those funds could have been used for providing 3rd world countries with food, drinkable water, medical supplies? What a fucking waste.

prohibition does not work. current government policy is politically driven not what is best for the community. The Aussie culture of having a beer after work glorifies an alcoholic lifestyle as a good Aussie way of life. Then on the other hand if you like a pipe after work you are the scum of the earth who will probably go kill/rape/steal and deserves to go to goal. And while I'm going on, the first people subject to random drug test should be the politicians!!
