should only cost you a new radiator about $500ish, cant see how it would have made the head gasket go so quickly. Definatally get a second opinion.

yeah just take it down to natrad and get them to do a leakdown just to prove whether or not it really is BHG.. doesn't cost that much.

get second opinion mate, no way you could blow a head gasget from blowing a hole in the radiator, the hole in the radiator would have just lost the coolant, the temp guage has hit the roof and then you turned it off, would take more than that to do a hg imho
my mate took his recently bought forester to a subaru dealership for 150k service, they told him the bad news when he picked the car up that he had a blown head gasget and gave him a large quote, he drove the car off, took it home jacked it up & saw no leaks, has been driving it around every since, even did a trip up north, it uses no coolant and to this day is all okay.... so yeah, second opinion is always good |

I will go up and see them tommorow to see if they can show me. But the fact that it has carbon, or something in the coolant says its definitely a gasket. I rang around a few Subaru specialists and from what the RAC told me they confirmed that would be their diagnoses aswell. I have decided I think I will get it fixed properly, and then I will sell the car and get me a bunky. I thought I would be willing to spend a lot of money on it to do it up and make it perfect, but just cant afford it anymore.
I like my cars perfect, this was just the best finds when I bought it, immaculate in and out with a full serv history and bought from a buyer who spent shit loads on it fixing every little issue or servicing thing. I never thrashed it or drove it hard and took it to the best mechanic.. But I just cant take the risk of spending thousands again in the future, so after I get it done it will be gone . Oh and don't worry by the time I am ready to sell this car it will be perfect, and every damn issue that I am aware of taken care of. So it wont be palmed off to some poor guy in a bad condition. I do believe in Karma very strongly!. Thanks for suggestions guys!. Last edited by woobla; 27-08-2009 at 09:13 PM. |

I think the fact you were considering getting RAC to rebuild the motor without even getting a second opinion and aren't prepared to spend any money in the future says it all...
If you want boring carefree motoring and are never going to drive your car hard then buy a Camry! You said you like your cars perfect but now your considering a bunky?? Come on! Time to man up, get the radiator fixed/replaced, put in some new coolant and see how it goes, the motor may be fine! You want to own an older performance car? Then get used to having to deal with the occasional hiccup. Maybe you'll learn a thing or two along the way as well! Sheesh! Kids these days... |

You told the other shops what the RAC told you (be it true or not), CO in the coolant....I'd tell you it had a fugged head gasket too if you asked me "what does CO in the coolant mean?"....And everyone is right...BUT what if the diagnosis is wrong??
RAC getting it wrong, fancy that?....Wanting to line there coffers with your ca$h?...... Needless headwork to make some $$?? From experience you've got to cook them pretty well to fuck the heads (i.e driving some distance with NO water in the block).....The EJ uses metal head gaskets from the factory...they're pretty reliable.
