dont trust RAC.. their mechanics are mostly monkeys. wouldnt have a clue! take everyones advice and get it tested from a known subaru specialist.. dont ring subaru dealerships either.. they will milk you for what your worth too.. as mentioned earliers ASG, Maximum Motorsport etc....

or sell it to Kato :P haha

Ali Radiator from tactiks or ebay for 200 odd bucks couple of new hoses 50 bucks coolant 30 bucks

280 bucks problem solvered. Do it yourself and you might even learn something

End of the day it needs a new radiator anyway... get that all on and get the system pressurised and see if it leaks (you can buy a kit to do this for not much money)

If it does leak (ie pressure goes down) look around for puddles and you will see where the problem is coming from.. If the pressure goes down.. and there is no puddles.. Well thats a problem

go to supercheap and buy a compression tester and test your cylinders. i think their about $30?. if your compression is down on one of the cylinders, most likely you've killed one of ya head gaskets, ive never had to do a head gasket on an boxer but from what ive heard, theirs a fair bit involved. do a google search on how to use a compression tester.

if i was in your situation and your motor is rooted, my advice would to not go to subaru specialists unless your prepared to pay a small fortune. u think about it, its gonna cost you the tow truck + the motor, parts and labor. its the labor that kills ya.

i rekon if ya motor is gone, find a version 3/4 ej20t motor (my97 and my98 both bolt up)

you can pick em up relativly cheap. looking at about $1500 to $2000 for a 2nd hand motor (maybe even cheaper). wack a new timing belt while its out. get all the boys together (good excuse to put on a bbq and beers), borrow an engine hoist and pull the motor out and wack the new one in.

before you put the new motor in, its a good idea to chuck in a new timing belt + new spark plugs. after the motors in.. new oil and oil filter

your gonna get more for it with a running motor than without a running motor.

fs. wrx, new low k motor, just had major service including new timing belt, as apposed to fs. wrx, blown motor.

put an ad up on www.rexnet.com.au, under the wtb section,

and phone these guys

allan at Swan auto wreckers

Phone: 08 9493 3555
Address: 31 Austin Avenue, Maddington WA 6109

Nick at Japanese wholesale spares

Phone: 08 9302 3519
Address: 21 Paramount Drive, Wangara, WA 6065

hope that helps ya out.

dan

^ you're assuming the diagnosis from the RAC is correct. I'd rather get it diagnosed from a Subaru specialist who has a clue.

Japanese wholesales in Wangara are great. Can recommend them highly after the help they have given me and at affordable prices.
Best of luck with it.

Have you priced parts to do this job lately? Your up for more than a few hundred in gasket kits and head bolts.

If it got hot enough to pop the head gasket chances are the head is warped and will need to be skimmed.
This means stripping the cams & valves out of it.......Hardly a 1 day job seeing as the head would need to sent out to a head specialist.......That and the fact that you wouldn't just do one head.... It would be an unwarrantable job if just one side was done.
