Just a bit of an update:

I took a drive down south over the w/end & did some logging during the trip (glad I did - read on )

After covering about 200km without issue, I accelerated to pass a caravan & got 2 knock spikes of 60 on the pfc......I never usually see anything over 10-15.

Very strange as I've been running the same tune since I last updated this thread.

I checked the recorded log and was very surprised to see AFR's of 12.6 @ 1.65 bar Very uncool, as the AFR's at that load should be 11.9, as I tuned it....Something wasn't right.

I dialed the boost back to 1 bar for the rest of the trip.....AFR's all safe & happy at this boost level (wideband hard wired in the car).

At this point it's worth noting that everything else was normal, no hesitation, no wandering idle, cruise & medium load afr's all spot on etc......None of the normal MY99-00 MAF failure/failing signs were apparent.

I went over the logs that night & noticed one thing that was odd, the MAF voltage would climb normally as the engine came on boost but it flat lined at 4.00 volts from 1.45 bar & up.

Below 1.45 all was normal. Looking at previous logs the Maf should have been topping out at 4.5 volts.....

Hmm, I cleaned the MAf 2 months ago during an oil change, I carry a can of contact cleaner in the boot....can't hurt to try to clean it again......No difference...... DAMN Rooted MAF! Bugger!!

F/fwd to today, I replaced the 2 1/2 year old maf with a new one......fired up the lappie & wound the boost back up to 1.6 bar, Afr's solid at 11.9....WIN!

I disassembled the old sensor for curiosity's sake (the side cover unclips) and made a discovery.....The film resistor used for airflow detection is etched into a wafer thin 2mm square glass insert....

The glass had cracked diagonally corner to corner....WTF!

How does that happen??

How the hell was it working at all with a crack across the resistor??

they are a hot-wire sensor, the air flow cools them down to give a reading.

just a guess, but with a hot piece of glass, any sudden tempurature change could cause a failure (from water etc)
