Was thinking that myself. I know a stock RS Liberty boost controller is only good for 16psi (I know its an unrelated fact) but not sure what happens if you go over.

Could this we the same deal?

I'd say it's getting a boost spike because of the cold weather, see if it does it in the middle of the day then take it for a run on a cold night, if it's only doing it when really cold there is the problem, mine does it when it's really cold & gets a gut full of icy air on the std computer because of the CAI.

Are you running a boost controller???

16 psi isn't stock boost for a 99-00 WRX (Stock =.98 bar or 14.4 psi)........Stock v6 sti runs 16.5 .....

What mods do you have?
(Is that an EJ207? - the manifold is red in the BOV photo)

My money is on a sticking/ partially blocked boost solenoid.

solenoid Sticks OPEN (over boosts)....then the ecu fires a low duty cycle % at it, then it unsticks...boost drops below target.....Ecu ramps up the duty cycle again to build boost back to target....solenoid sticks open again = overboost again........the only thing saving it will be the boost olive which is letting the wastegate creep.

Hitting boost cut is like hitting a brick wall......The Ecu cuts all fuel.
Trust me you'll know when you encounter it! (you nearly head butt the dash!)

Hit boost cut twice and the ecu goes into limp mode (CEL lit & 7psi max boost).
