it occurs when the stereo is off so not related.

My first thought was the power steering pump as the noise was similar to when the pump went on my commodore but it starts happening when i start the car so there is no load on the pump.

Have you checked the P/s fluid level?

low level will have it whining as it sucks air..........

Alternately remove the two accessory belts, start the car and see if it still whines (indicating either cambelt tensioner/idlers or the water pump) whilst the a/c, alternator & P/s pump are not running. <- I would do this.

Hi guys,

Sorry about the delay in response but thought i should post an update on the problem, turns out it was the bearings on the idler pulley so not an expensive problem to sort out.

All good now
