I did have that issue initially.....What cap are you running?

I went to a 1.5 bar STI cap and it behaves normally now.

I would assume it is running a standard 98 wrx one. No idea really.
Whats the STI one worth? Might be a goer...

you can get other aftermarket one with higher pressure, look at vision R in o'connor.

Sti one is around $80 from memory.

No adverse effects to upping the pressure in the cooling system of a bog stock wrx?

What water temp are you seeing?

It should be being regulated to 89 by the stat.

how long does it take to warm up in the morning?

The heater core *can* be an issue if someone hasn't used coolant at some stage.

I think there's a 1.3 bar available too which would be safer.

I just purchased (ordered in) 02 STI caps from MMS. Round 1.3 bar cap for the radiator & eared 1.08 bar cap for the header tank. Just over $50 for the pair.

Part numbers of caps I got were:
45137FE002 (Rad)
45137AE002 (Header Tank)
Yellow labels on both, no STI logo.

Then they're not the high pressure STi ones, they're the 1.1 bar stock caps.

That's the one you want ^^
