radiator thickness?
Hi guys and gals,
My radiator in my 02 Sti is on the way out and would like to purchase an alloy replacement. Question is how thick can I go before I need to add extra fans and what not. Am looking at some koyo products but not sure which one to purchase. |

You don't need to add extra fans at all (they're only effective if the car isn't moving).
My current alloy core is 3" thick and the car runs @ 89 degrees always, including during track work.

3 inch thick radiator? Epic.
I got a China Spec 40mm rad from ebay. Stock fans bolt on. Runs Mid 80s C all day.

Not sure if its the case for Turbo Subies but with most race cars it is possible for them to run too cold. Always an optimum operating temp for max power.

Isn't that what the thermostat is supposed to take care of???

This is true. I never saw the point of a huge fat radiator if the thermostat then spends more time restricting water flow. I always worked on the thermostat being fully open on track and only really used it to heat engine from startup.

Yeah it's a fat pig...... It added about 2.5 litres to the cooling system capacity.....is china spec too btw....lol! I had to mod the radiator support to fit it.

I've just fitted a 50mm radiator to my 02 bugeye using stock fans. Top & bottom hoses had to be trimmed about 20mm to fit properly. I think there would be clearance issues with the fans/pulleys if you went any thicker. Btw mines also Ebay china spec.

I've currently got a borrowed Koyo in mine, and while cruising on the freeway the ecu is still in coldstart mode, constantly adding more fuel to warm the engine up

I have a 52mm core ebay spec rad in my car. It also holds around 2lts more coolant. Do you find that with the extra capacity, you need to run a lower level in the overflow or it overflows when it gets warm?
