Default Clunk Clunk Clunk

Hi all,

So I have a clunking coming from my drivetrain. It feels like its coming from the rear of the car, in the diff, tailshaft or driveshaft area.

It doesn't happen all the time either.. basically it doesn't do it unless the car has been driving for a while, or its been given a bit of a belt.

To describe the noise:

- It starts off sounding like a light infrequent knocking and feels like something is "loose" in the drivetrain and only rears its head when I'm on part throttle or transitioning between off and on throttle (right at that point in the middle between off and on throttle).
- At this point it's intermittent too, not speed dependent.
- Then after a bit it'll start doing it dependent on speed.. clunk, clunk, clunk, clunk. As you go faster or slower, the clunking increases or decreases with speed.
- If I leave the car sit for a while and drive it again, it doesn't do it.

I'm going to put the car up on ramps tonight and have a look if anything is loose, but any ideas as to where I should start looking?

Cheers

Check the tailshaft uni's/cv
check that the inner cv's are locked all the way in to the rear diff.

Had something with similar symptoms that turned out to be 1 inner cv popping out of the diff, mine would clunk when coasting & turning left...It was the right-hand inner cv.

Shot in the dark but maybe tailshaft needs balancing?

Thanks guys,

Checked all that and it was fine.. then I had a closer look at the CV's.

Around the left inner CV was a pile of brown grease flung all over the floor pan and diff housing.

The CV itself makes a clicking/knocking noise when I grab the shaft and shake it back and forward, and it actually moves too, where as the other side is rock solid. The boot has probably deteriorated and it probably didn't help that the exhaust is about 1cm from the CV boot.

So can I rebuild the CV or is it just worth replacing the shaft?

Last time I did the CVs in my work Libby, exchange recond shafts were the way to go as it wasn't much more than buying the boots, grease & clamps plus factoring in own labour time.

Can't remember his name but there's some old retired guy in Mandurah who just reconds CVs; he was my last source. Maybe others on here know of him?

pull the shaft out, cut the boot off and check it out, could be worn out, from memory there is a big clip that holds the shaft cup thingo (and big ball bearings) in there, lever the clip out with a flat-head screwdriver and it will just slide apart, do it on a workbench as the balls will just drop out, once you get it apart it will be easier to see if its worn past servicing, if its still in ok condition just get a new cv boot from veal for about $12 and it comes with cv clips & cv grease
