Just so other users who search and read this, AFM failure does throw a CEL or at least on the scan gauge for 01 onwards

Are you running an oil filter?

Too far from me, otherwise I'd come for a drive and swap mine into it for 5 mins.

There must be someone else with a 99-00 in your area that you know?

99-00 GC8 afm's hold a fixed output voltage when they fail, the ecu see's the voltage and thinks all is good....The ecu isn't very smart.

A scan tool will show this on the GC's too: if you look at the afm output voltage and happen to notice it's constant regardless of actual airflow.

01 GD on are a different type of sensor & the ecu is 'smarter'.

Yes, agreed
Its always good to be clear as most will read your original post and assume that the 01 onwards don't throw CELs or errors.

Try plan b. Got to tandy, dick smith and pick up electrical contact cleaner
Take AFM off, and give it a good squirt, let it rest and put AFM back
