PS- While your messing around in there, adjust your brake master cylinder stopper so that the bolt is resting further on the outer circumference of the pipe wall. Pressure in the centre has been known to = fail.

My MY00 wrx threw a CEL about 15km after I did my AFM. I knew when it happened, because it started up strange, then when I gave it some stick it jolted like boost cut... then was very hesitant and jerky to come onto boost... so I assumed it was the AFM (I have a pod filter ) and drove home very slowly off boost... Once home I turned it off, left it, then started it up a bit later, and it threw a CEL...

From memory, a new AFM for the 99/00 from Subaru is ~$260

But I'd try some contact cleaner on there to see if it makes any difference first.

A scan tool will show this on the GC's too: if you look at the afm output voltage and happen to notice it's constant regardless of actual airflow.

01 GD on are a different type of sensor & the ecu is 'smarter'.

Now this is interesting.

So what is it exactly?

Does a stuffed AFM on a MY99-00 throw a CEL or not?

sometimes Joe, most times it doesn't. I imagine in Jezzas case it caused a secondary problem that caused the CEL

No it doesn't.

It usually falsly triggers the CEL for the IAC (idle air control) or TPS out of range which aren't related/ haven't failed.

The ecu is too thick to work out it's recieving a fixed afm signal.

As soon as mine went it threw a CEL for air flow meter. most times if the ecu doesnt see the voltage expected from the afm it will put up that code. The stock computer is not dumb, it is actully very inteligent. The ecu calculates estimated air flow from tps and engine revs. That is how it can run without a air flow meter.

If it detects a air flow meter fault it changes the fuel mixture to a richer mixture and cuts fuel at higher revs to help stop engine damage.
