Yep, pending the insurance payout sure is much better than my old one to drive! apparently its producing about 300hp atw so at some stage i'm going to need to do this....

any idea what sort of numbers i'll be looking at if i just drop in a 207 block
or for that matter, a 257... nothing else done other than injectors and a tune...?

been looking around but i don't really know enough about it all to made an educated decision, or even hazard a guess at the numbers i'll be looking at :P

whats so special about stock 207s and 257s ... there just standard donks ... wouldnt it be better to build your block with better internals ????

The right factory crate motor 207s are already built with forged internals, and built to factory tolerances. They have been proven with the right bolt ons in the right hands to run 2.5+ bar of boost (36psi) and make 500+hp unopened. They will last another 200,000km like the factory motor and not need to be torn down every 20,000km like an aftermarket "built" motor to re-do rings and bearings. In most cases you can slap on a new water pump, oil pump, timing belt, put your old heads back on and off you go. I think a 207 crate motor goes for somewhere between $2500-3500 these days and is ready to go. A built motor will probably cost you 7-10 grand.

a 257 has all the same advantages as the above, with the added bonus of an extra 500cc of capacity and all the benefits taht brings. the down side is that a 2.5L shares the same block as the 2L so the bores are signficantly thinner and will fail sooner.

ninja edit:

also, the 207 is a semi closed deck block which has more support for the bores, his standard my99 motor is an open deck block. More machining is required to bring his block up to the same level as the crate motor.

wow they must be amazingly built ... why dont more ppl buy these motors to make 500hp and last 200 000ks ... instead they go spending 10k on built motors to only just scrape over 400hp ... and i thought they were just stock sti donks ...

GTR ETA runs a stock 207 bottom end with 40+psi of boost....makes well over 300KW and runs 10's.
