GT is the 2L turbo up to 2002, XT is the 2.5L turbo from 2003 on.

Essentially same car, just a badge name change when the new model came out.

I thought there were a couple of years where there was no turbo Forester? After the GT and before the next top-of-the-line? I used to follow the releases quite closely in case we decided to buy a new one, but the GT just kept going and going with no problems.

Not as far as I know. The original Foresters came out for a year or so before the GT did (98 they started, GT's in 99).

According to Redbook, the very first XT was a year after the SG (MY03-05) body shape came out. They started selling the SG's in Aug 02 but doesn't look like there was an XT until late 2003. So I'm kinda wrong but kinda right

gt's came out in 98 actually... but they were listed as my99
