Exclamation Kaaz synchro - straight cut 5 speed rattling in second.....:(

Anyone have experience with the Kaaz synchro straight cut 5 speed gear set?

Buddy of mine has Phizzle's old car and it has developed a rattle in second gear after a road trip to Wundowi over the week end.

The car is still only running very mild mods power-wise (Exhaust, air filter, stock ecu).

It only makes noise in second under load & has a rattle in neutral with the car stationery.

There's a minor amount of metal dust in the oil (but is has a mechanical front diff).

Opinions please??

2nd went on the mainshaft a few months before I sold it. Maybe it's playing up again? Doug checked it all out and said it was good to go after he installed the new mainshaft ex-Japan @ $1150
I'd be taking it to the one man who knows his gearboxes inside out and sometimes inside outside lol

I'll bet it's ripped another tooth off the new mainshaft.

I've given Matt your contact details Dougie, He'll contact you when he gets a chance (may be a few weeks).

What causes it to strip mainshaft teeth?
Is it a Kaaz machining/ clearance issue?

These gear sets are supposed to be able to handle 500 crank horsepower aren't they?

I got it off VF34 (Nick) Ross. He said 500 torque I believe. If it has failed again you will need to get a new one through Cypher in O'Connor. I couldn't get mine under any sort of warranty as they knew the box had been to the track (with Nick, not me) and at that stage it'd done about 25,000kms. It's probably only done another 5000kms since being fixed so there is certainly some fault going on with there mainshafts if it is the cause. If you still have my number give me a call and get that other mainshaft that broke as I still have it in my shed. If you take 2 busted ones to him and say what the fuck they might be able to do something about it. The tooth on my one sheared off clean as and that was slowing down and shifting 3 to 2 to turn into my driveway at 35-40km/h.

Best of luck to Matt

Thanks Phil!

Maybe the front diff is hammering the gearset?

Matt said it started making noise after coming off the freeway at Powis st (the 2nd gear left hander)....Coincidence?

Could be, the diff makes it full lock under power and half lock under deceleration so maybe it's binding up a little and there is too much 'mechanical' deceleration which as Doug said when the first one happened, the gears sort of get used to being under load in one direction so when you change the side of the tooth taking all the force, she comes loose and tears ensue.

Probably doesn't happen as much with PPG's because the face of each gear is much wider than standard whereas the KAAZ set is closer to a stock size, just with different ratios and being straight cut obviously. So you'd imagine the PPG's will take more effort to break. But the reason I liked the KAAZ set so much was that they weren't as loud or 'cop bait'.

Either way, I'd like to know what Cypher plan to do about it because that is ridiculous.
