Help me pick some mods
Hello all, well had the STI for a day now, its heavy, stock exhaust is crap (no dak dak!) and standard tune is probably average im guessing. and turn in / ability to hold a line isnt the best (compared to say a 8MR). so ive been thinking.
Coilovers Sway bars decent alignment 3" TBE (what are my options?) Cold air setup (pod with a shield? whats the go here?) Autronic ecu are there any emissions tricks or any little DIY items that are known to improve the power/performance of the car? also it is rolling on std sti wheels (7.5" WTF!) and needs a set of 8" CR KAI's so i can run some sticky 235's plans with the car is 16km round trip to work 6 days a week, sundays are for taking it out for a play and some track work in there. Any help greatly appreciated! Jake. |

Learn to drive it properly first....wait a month or so & get used to it.
Use the search function on these forums.....Exhausts, cold air intakes & suspension have been covered about 100,000000 million times now. P.s Add decent tyres to your list too.

Suspension.
And not just one part. The works. Get it turning corners. THEN make sure it stops. THEN make sure it goes. Have a goal, draw up a plan, execute it. Doing it like this will also enable you to see the affects of the changes along the way. And as Ross said, search, read, search, read. Its all here. You just need to look. Brent.

Any mods you do to the car can't really be chosen by others, they all depend on what you will be using the car for and what you can afford.
My first advice would be as Rossco said, learn the car. SleepR pretty much hit it on the nose, more power should be the last thing you do (although, again, this depends on what exactly you had in mind for the car) Tyres, swaybars and few minor suspension mods should sort out the handling department...from there the possibilities are vast. Best option for ECU & power mods is choose a workshop and speak to them about your options, as they're the ones who you want to work on the car it's best to go with what they work best with. At the end of the day you need to plan what sort of car you want to have once all is done & dusted, and what you can afford to run, insure and also afford to have break & fix again as you fiddle with things. Search the forums as virtually any avenue of modification for a subaru has been explored in one way or another on here, if worst comes to worst put up a few options you are having trouble deciding between and others may be able to offer some advice.

As above on all accounts also you can't really compare a stock STi to
an EVO 8MR as that's not the stock EVO 8 model. A better comparison for the EVO 8MR would be a Spec C.

Even the 8MR in its stock form pitches and rolls like a boat, you learn to adjust driving style.

i understand what you are all saying, suspension work and braking is already planned, tein SS coilovers, whiteline ALK, whiteline adjustable sways etc. what i want from the car is something responsive, good for AHG days, collie, barbagallo (i know its a power track), but i purchased this car to get back into motorsport, but do more grip events (previous car on the track was 180sx and rx-7 x2), also havnt done a hill climb before and it looks interesting. i remember when a guy i used to work with was setting up his car for targa (challenge mod). had all the handling mods, chassis prep, LF cage etc. standard STI turbo, restricted exhaust, but made bulk power for what it was, but it was so sharp and poised. anyways i will stop talking crap.
i rang MMS today, spoke to them about what suggested mod path for my intended purpose, one thing they mentioned was to go for a pod in the 1/4 panel (hyperflow style). which makes sense. then i ring Allstar, they say with std turbo the sti airbox flows well enough, just gut the resonator and put in a high flow panel. then there is the ECU, after having a play with a evo 6 TME with antilag around some tight corners i always thought i would want it in a car like this, to increase the response. however i dont know if it will make much difference, and also the point of $990 to tune the std ecu vs. $3800 for the SM4, knockboard and tune. not that the money is make or break, but is the antilag going to make THAT much difference? and with the standard seat i cant get in the car with my helmet on. so not i have to look for a new seat. i know this stuff has been covered but in the sea of conflicting information i thought i might be able to tap into those with experience and find some clarity. All input greatly appreciated. Jake. |

Re the antilag, you wont want to be running it for extended periods unless your looking at frequently fixing things like turbo's and exhaust valves
If you want it responsive, 3" TBE, panel filter with additonal cold air intake, keep the stock turbo + TMIC (if its a GDB) and a good tune. Down the track you can look at going twin-scroll for even more mid-range and top end. |
