Default Oil Cooler More Information Please

So had a read of Tiddy's thread Click here where the general consensus of the thread states that its not really worth it as there aren't any gains, up to a comment made by blaze(?), being another reason to buy an EVO as they come factory:

Its been mentioned to me to look into an oil cooler set up purely on the basis of being a big end saver but I would like to know more.

Another opinion on the above thread was Kato's, which has deterred me from the mod is this

Okay so factoring in its a quality install are there any benefits of installing an oil cooler, do you have to be chasing/have a certain amount of horse power to make it a viable mod?

Purely looking into installing this on the basis of engine safety, can some one go into the specifics of its viability in greater depth then what was mentioned in Tiddy's thread please.

Cheers,

There's no advantage to running an external cooler on a street car, regardless of your HP...It's pretty hard to get the bottom end hot enough to warrant it if you're only using full power for a handful of seconds at a time.

With a cheap cooler kit on the street you run the risk of running the oil too cold, as they usually have no thermostat to keep the oil temp constant.

Quality kits have a thermostat to regulate the oil temp to around 90-95 degrees c, which is where oils generally have their best film strength.

The stock oil/water cooler (on the filter mount) is fine for skid pan/ street/ drags.

As Kato unfortunately found out, they (external coolers) add failure points not found in the stock lubrication system, where any failure is a catastrophe.

Unless deemed a necessity by your tuner I'd skip it for reliability.

Absolutely.
The hoses are too close to the exhaust on a EJ Subaru to do it safely without spending a heap of unnecesssary dollars.

Only worth it for track use imo.

Once you put aftermarket headers on, I guess things get too close and too hot so you would need braided lines rather than the standard PW lines.

yup only do it if your going to do it properly teflon braided hoses etc etc..

In saying that the extra oil capacity is also a good thing..

Just adding onto this with a request for more information:

I've been reading through the big end shitstorm threads on NASiOC and they have made mention of replacing the OEM sump and oil pick up with 06 STi counterparts.

I always thought the STi sump was slightly smaller then WRX OEM 'to accomodate for ELH', hence holding less oil but can someone please comment as to the benefits 'is there much in the way of material benefits', of using the parts mentioned above compared to OEM.

Not a twin scroll debate unless someone is will to donate me the turbo and headers free of charge

All 2.5lt sumps have the smaller section so its not just for twin scroll only EL header cars or STi's (2.0lt TS).

The oil pick up issue in the USA was because the original 2.5l ones were fatigue cracking where they bolt on to the block/pump....allowing the oil pump to pull air...oil bubbles don't lubricate too well.

All points duly noted.

My curiosity came about as its from a thread in the 2lt powertrain section stating the 06 pickup and sump are a better option 'which doesn't make sense to me as its a smaller pan(?).

Alternately picking up an 06 pickup may be a viable option or do any benefits become null and void if I use my OEM pan?
