Default Heat shields

Can anyone point me in the right direction, I have a Norm Butler exhaust on my car and I get a very bad sound of metal vibrating on metal. Norm said the sound is heat shields up around the turbo. Subaru say that there is a rattle in the exhaust. how easy or how much would it cost me to take the heat sheilds off. This noise is getting louder and starting to piss me off.

Thanks Steve.

First of all, have you checked to see if the heat shield around the turbo is loose?

Failing that, Jack the car up, with supporting jack stands and check if you can locate the source?

Ignore Subaru first off.

I'd say not all bolts were installed again or not tight enough when the exhaust was put back on, have a feel around the turbo (when it's cold!!!) & see if there's any obviously loose bits or missing bolts, check the ones there are tight as well.

Remember the heat shields are their for a purpose!

Don't just remove them, just tighten the bolts.

Grab a BIG-ARSE screw driver, have someone hold the throttle at the point where the vibrations are loudest and press around on the heatshields until you hear the noise change or subside.

John makes good exhausts. i work for subaru and ill tell you now that its the heat shielding, personally i would just take it off and heat wrap the dump pipe, but if you want to keep them try finding some spring washers and new bolts then use them in the exhisting heat shields to tighten them up

the rear of the turbo heatshield requires trimming to clear any bell mouthed dumps, if it hasn't been trimmed enough there is a chance it could be intermittantly hitting/vibrating

It'll be the up pipe heatsheild. They tend to come loose and make anoying rattling noises. When the cars cold, get your hand down and give it a rattle, tap it with a stick or something and see if it makes noise.
