Seriously? you want to unbolt the exhaust and engine mounts just to replace the valve cover gaskets? Its not nessacary, Tillee, Just remove the oil filler neck on the left, the battery, and the washer bottle. Remove the air box completely on the right. Then you can just slide them out, I think its easier to get the LHS out from the bottom.

Well that depends on what you want to do. If you're keen to clean up the mating surfaces and not have to f*ck around with bolts and spanners in a 3/4 inch space then you might find it worthwhile.

Dropping the manifold isn't difficult, it's only a matter of undoing the nuts on the studs. It's a hassle-free job if you have someone who can hold it in place while you undo the last few nuts and when you bolt it all back on.

Just go with whatever suits. For me, I'd rather sacrifice a half hour of time to unbolt/bolt the manifold than dick around in a confined space.

Everyone has a different way of doing stuff. A lot of it depends on the tools and eqiupment you have. When you do this work on a daily basis you obviously have a selection of different special tools that make life easy, the DIY home mechanic is probably using an Indian made spanner set and a pair of sliding pivot 'Toyota tool kit' pliers. The minimum work required is what John said, if you're using the tool kit above, you may spend all weekend doing it.
