Maybe if you spend another 10k upgrading to STi spec running gear......Kato was on the money before. If you have money to spend then put it towards an STi and only spend money getting this running again. You will kick yourself in the future if you don't.

Cheapest options would be either purchase a second hand block through skull88 or getting your mechanic of choice to source a back to factory option.

Remove engine.
dismantle engine. Install new pistons. Reinstall engine. Sell car Replace with sti. Done. EDIT: Or possibly replace with a second hand 2.5 long motor. Either way, if you want to do with it what you mentioned previously, an STI (or even evo) is the cheapest/most viable option.
